Be careful what you wish for Strat, you just might get it lol. We're not great by any means, but we're not bad either. We haven't come close to playing our best yet, and we're undefeated. We've also been lucky.
The off-sides we complain about should be tempered by the fact that if we don't catch a lucky goal against ENG, our tourney would be over even with today's win. Refs never call games of their own countries.
There are two assistant refs on the sides, that see very well any offsides, and they usualy inform the main ref about them. [Show/Hide Quoted Message] (Quoting Message by ron h from Wednesday, June 23, 2010 12:03:25 PM) | | ron h wrote: | | I tend to like the human element with regards to officiating, no matter the sport. I think we've all been on both sides of a bad call and it's weird because we only complain when it goes against us, yet cheer when we get lucky.
ALL of these off-sides calls are pure judgement calls as the action is fast and they have to make calls in a split-second. We fans watching on the TV really only know after seeing the slow-motion replay. 'Off-sides' seems to be the big difference maker this year, for a number of teams and not just the U.S. Although that sucks, there's been triple as many shots on goal going off the bar instead of in the net, I'm more concerned about that!!
I tend to think the sport needs better traing, maybe more ref's on the field or ref's not calling games of their own home countries (maybe that's a rule that's already in place, I don't know). What I do know is that if the U.S. made the goals they should have throughout the tournament, today would not have been so critical a match. |

Well, its true that in football a referee is a very independant figure, and rules are sometimes very lax just to give the ref space to make his own decisions. What you also have to take into consideration is that blaming the referee is a very common practice of sore loosers. Now, sometimes the ref really is biased, and they can change the game completely, but I dont think that that happend in this cup. Yet. Now then, there ARE poor calls in every sport but, by and large, the officiating is very good in OUR sports. NOTHING like this, anyway!
Perhaps they need to better review how they pick the officials for this game? I am not sure but I keep hearing this over and over and these announcers are NOT just Americans with a grudge. These are guys from all over the world! They are STILL going on about the "terrible" call that just cost the US a "goal"...??!??!!? Then they start in about 2002 and whatnot so, apparently, this is an ongoing issue? Certainly can see why this is not of much interest here in the States. Maybe they need "instant replay" or something? Maybe a test for referees? I have no idea. Just seems as though the real story continues to be the refs. THAT is sad.

Well, pretentious pricks they may be... But US and England deserve to go on. Our team was an utter disapointment. I really think that they were too comfortable today, and went for a draw, then ended up losing everything. They didnt deserve to win after todays performance. Too bad.
Now, looking forward to the evening, I hope that at least Serbia can save the honor of the Yugoslavian school of football. |

Well, if they got all the cards that they earned, they would have been down to ten by halftime. I hope that the ref on the US - Algeria match wont tolerate such dirty playing.
Abyway, Im rooting that our team and the Algerians win today, and advance. England mustnt go through in any case. Well, too bad for SA... I was really hoping that they will advance. But I guess that today it was a bit too much. I mean, they would have to win with four goals of difference, considering the result of the other game. Still, no matter what state the French team is in, this is a victory to remember.
Well, I cant wait till tomorrow. The euphoria here is reaching its climax, and if we fail to go to the next round it will probably mean a national disaster. I am proudly South African today and now we can go back to being the best host country in WC history!
