It could be worse though! One summer when I was about 15 I went to the beach and everywhere I went they play "Ring My Bell" by some stupid pop singer/one hit wonder! I thought I would be driven insane by that song! He name was something champagne. Shudder just thinking of it! Actually J.D., even the glam bands are considered Hard Rock. It's about attitude and volume. Yeah, some if not a lot of the stuff is cheesey pop-metal ala Bon Jovi, but it's still Hard Rock when you strip away the hair and makeup and listen to the songs...a lot of which are very good and actually have meaning.
J.D. DIAMOND wrote:
This is in no way, shape of form a "hard rock" album Cobras....it is simply a (in my opinion "overrated") commercial hair band era 80's "rock" album, not "hard rock"....."hard rock" is Motorhead....hard rock would be some of "AC/DC" not all,but some...hard rock would be some of "Saxon" even though they also play traditional heavy metal they still write hard rock songs...
Hard rock is like some of the Scorpions..ect...these are hard rock bands,Whitesnake is no where near "hard rock"....and the era of the album you posted ..they were "glam" at the fullest dude, bunch of pretty boys with hair spray with the most commercial sound there was at that time.
Sorry Cobras, not trying to make you angry here but Whitesnake is no where even near "hard" to be "hard rock" and thats what you put in the topic is "YOUR CLASSIC HARD ROCK ALBUM OF THE DAY".
Cobras-Aura wrote:
Well...classic rock and hard rock deserve attention too. So here is the thread. My album of the day is 1987 by Whitesnake. Great sound, great attitude and style. It's a lot like Guns N' Roses' Appetite For Destruction. Along with Appetite For Destruction and Racer X's Street Lethal, it was a big "Fuck You" to the glam movement. Well done boys. None of us here can change what the commercial media wants to categorize these geres but every time I see somebody post and list a band as "metal"...I'm going to have my say on it because "I can".....and I will. Darth,...these bands Poison and Cinerella..ect..are in no way shape or form "metal"..its not "popmetal".....its not hair bandmetal..its not glam metal .....it is not "METAL" at all. Poison is Bubblegum with a distorted guitar. They are no fucking different than whoever did "Yummy Yummy Yummy, I got love in my tummy" ( Boy didnt that one turn out to be about something!! ) or that "Sugar" tune from the 60's. They are the fucking "Monkeys" of the 80's. Sub standard pop to make teenage girls wet their panties. And whos brilliant idea was it to make that Brett Michaels fuck even more of a celeb today? While I might agree with the other comments, how DARE you badmouth the Monkees!!! Bite your tongue, sir!
Ok, you can make fun of Peter Tork but that is it...
I agree. No band that fits in the "hair metal" genre is Metal at all. It was a term invented (to suit the look mainly) of those bands and it was the closest thing the Strip had to metal at that time. I do enjoy hair metal bands (in small doses and not the obscure ones cause they all sound the fuckin same to me, I like originality) but metal is still my favorite genre. Priest, Maiden and Sabbath all the way. [Show/Hide Quoted Message](Quoting Message by J.D. DIAMOND from Wednesday, April 01, 2009 4:23:43 PM)

Guys, it doesn't matter what an artist or a band writes about...it's about the music itself. Kiss is hard rock (and also made a couple of heavy metal albums in the early 80's)...but they sing about screwing and partying. Hell, A SHITLOAD of bands from the 70s through today do that! Whitesnake is one of them. Poison and Cinderella are others. Hmmmm...let's see who else? Motley Crue? Yes. GnR? Yes. Tesla? Yes. Personally, I think it's all a matter of taste.
Maybe we could get a better understanding of the differences in opinion by everyone giving their own definition of what is Metal and what is Hard Rock?
Here's what Metal is to me: It's an attitude. It's a lifestyle for some. It's stronger, more powerful and complex rythyms, riffs and lyrics. The New York Times music critic Jon Pareles wrote, "In the taxonomy of popular music, heavy metal is a major subspecies of hard-rock—the breed with less syncopation, less blues, more showmanship and more brute force." It's a quote that I think sums up Heavy Metal or just Metal in general, pretty accurately.
Hard Rock is rock and roll with a bigger punch. It's louder, and hard rock bands/artists tend to be the ones who get the majority of airplay (Kiss, Led Zep, Alice Cooper, Deep Purple, etc...). It's heavily blues-influenced and is generally more melodic in sound than Metal.

Yes Head Banger I see your point, but bands like Poison must not be listed as "heavy metal". As Darth said below....he thinks that it's pop metal...but still "metal"......but its not ANY KIND of metal at all!
Metal must be left out of these titles.
I gave up trying to categorize stuff a long time ago. now there are 2 categories, what I like, and what I dont like. think about it, is all priest metal, if so, what sub genre? Rocka rolla? painkiller? most is NWOBHM, but could painkiller be thrash? RR metal?

Funny but iTunes and Windows Media Player both list Poison and Cinderella as metal. Ya know what? I'm fine with it. It's pop-metal, but it's still metal IMO.

Sorry Cobras...I could'nt let this one slide here....I know your intentions were positive and I know you were just trying to get the point across to those who want to post a classic rock album in this thread..ect..ect..ect..but I had to clear up the aesthetics and genre of Whitesnake in the era of 1987.

WTF??? Granted, Whitesnake's 1987 self-titled album is a great hard rock album. However, it is in no way, shape or form a "Fuck You" to the glam movement. Hell, I can't even think of an 80's hard rock album that is any sort of a "Fuck You" to the glam movement except for Appetite.
