Let me envision that... during the last show, the band ends the set with Metal Gods. During the slamming intro, the lights are dimmed, but they'll soon get brighter so that the crowd can see Ian taking steps in rhythm with the slams of the intro. The intro is extended long enough that Ian can make it to the front of the stage, after which the rest of the band will join up and start playing, Ian still up close to the front.

How cool would that be?

Ian Hill is waiting patiently at the backstage area, just a couple of hours before Judas Priest unleash an unbelievable show to the Greek fans that have gathered that night to witness the legendary band on their so called “Epitaph World Tour”. Hill is a genuinely kind man that has absolutely no problem in answering in an immediate manner to all our questions (including the topic of K.K. Downing’s recent departure). “Is there anything left for you to achieve with the band”, we ask him. The answer comes straight and without any hesitation: “I don’t really think so...we are Priest”!

Rockpages.gr: Well, Ian, here you are for the “Epitaph World Tour” but this is not the end for Judas Priest as you have stated...
 
Ian Hill: No, it’s not the end of Judas Priest…we’ve never intended to “kill” the band. We just need to slow down a little bit as we’ve touring and doing albums almost constantly for 40 years now. It really takes a large chunk of your life; so, we have to be…well…not choosey of where we will play in the future but how many shows we can do in a specific time. The European Festivals will always be a good option but we can’t do anymore the big touring thing…leave here, go to South America, then straight to USA, Japan, Australia…you know. Not that we don’t enjoy it; we love it! We love to travel, we love to visit places and do a little bit of sightseeing, especially when we have a day off. Bear in mind that we’ve been doing this for 40 years. After 6 months not being on the road, you get a little bit itchy because you need to be on stage again (laughs)! But, unfortunately, you don’t get any younger. Of course, we will continue to record as well…we have already written an album’s worth of material. Three songs are properly recorded and roughly mixed. I think that the record company might put out something, just a bit of something so as to let the fans know of what’s coming along. It’s gonna be a great album and it’s gonna carry on from where “Angel of Retribution” left off. We got “Nostradamus” out of our system and now we are heading towards classic Priest metal….the screams, the fast, the slow and the heavy! A little bit of everything. A big “thank you” for all that we are doing goes out to the fans.  
 
Rockpages.gr: How does it feel to be reaching the end of your career? I mean, not only as a musician but as a person...
 
Ian Hill: It’s gonna be very sad, I suppose…luckily we are in the middle of a long tour and we are taking it from gig to gigreally. We will worry about it when the last show comes.
 
Rockpages.gr: I suppose you will get emotional on your last show?
 
Ian Hill: Quite possibly…well, the thing is that it won’t be the last show…I am talking about this tour.

Rockpages.gr: You have also a new member in the band...Richie Faulkner.

Ian Hill: Yes, we do.

Rockpages.gr: How important is his contribution to Judas Priest in regards with the live show?

Ian Hill: Richie is great, as you will see tonight. He is a great talent, a great guitarist, a great bloke and a great performer on stage. If we wouldn’t have found him, it would have been a struggle for us really. He came along and we couldn’t be luckier.  

Rockpages.gr: Was it awkward for the band and you personally to be performing without K.K.?

Ian Hill: Not really! I mean…Ken decided to retire; he’s having trouble with his wrist; I think that was probably the main reason. We gave him a lot of time to change his mind…I tried to persuade him to change his mind but he seemed adamant…he wanted to retire. We had to move on as a band. Richie was a gift to us and being a Priest fan himself, he knew almost all the songs that we were planning for this tour. The important thing is that Richie has kept the essence of what Ken was doing…with his lead breaks, his solos…although, he still leaves his own stamp in the music.

Rockpages.gr: How does it feel to be the only original member?

Ian Hill: (laughs) Oh yeah…(laughs)

Rockpages.gr: Is it 1970…? Early 1970?

Ian Hill: 1969 really…that was when we started.

Rockpages.gr: That makes you now something like a father figure to the other guys…

Ian Hill: (laughs) No! Well, maybe for Scott (Travis) and Richie. They are the young ones. But, the rest of us have been together for so many years…Glenn, Rob and myself…we are grateful to have had the luck to enjoy a good life together and continue in one way or another.  

Rockpages.gr: Why don’t you get to compose more songs for Judas Priest?

Ian Hill: Well, Ken, Glenn and Rob had formed a great writing team. I am perfectly happy to get along with it. And how can you argue with all those great songs that Priest had delivered through the years (laughs)?

Rockpages.gr: Ian, when will we see playing in the very front of the stage? I mean all these years you are standing by the drum kit.

Rockpages.gr: Ian, after all these years is there anything left that you haven’t achieved?

Ian Hill: I think that we have achieved everything that we’d set out to achieve…I don’t really think so…we are Priest, you know! I am sure that none of the other guys would have thought back in the day that we will still be doing that after 40 years. We even got a Grammy award which was nice.

Rockpages.gr: Flash forward 20 years from now…you are sitting on the porch and a kid with a metal t-shirt stops by and asks: “Mr. Hill, which is the quintessential Judas Priest record that I should listen to? Which is the cornerstone record of your career”?

Ian Hill: Oh, the cornerstone record…it’s probably the first one.

Rockpages.gr: Really?

Ian Hill: Yeah, I mean…it wasn’t well recorded; actually it sounded fucking awful (laughs)! But, after all these years of working hard and trying to make it…one day you go into a record store and you see your record on the shelves…it was the time when “Rocka Rolla” was among all my favorite records…Cream, The Stones, Animals, The Beatles…all those great bands. When I saw our album in the record store, I instantly knew that we have arrived! But, I guess that every band considers their debut as a really important first step on the ladder. Then, it’s up to you to improve or blow it! Fortunately, we were able to improve and we kept building our sound from album to album.

I have a damn life, I have an opinion after buying ALL of your friggin albums and CD's amd DVD's priest.  My life does not revolve around the priest as you have set up this dumb web site to be. I had a priest logo on my jean jacket in the 80's, was VERY proud to wear it, saw several concerts and you guys were super tight with certain drummers. KK not being part of priest on their LAST tour ever. This is not cool on any level. I always leaned toward Glenn in the guitar department, but, after hearing this news, Glen without KK = no priest to me. Guitar team of all time, CANNOT be seperated, NEVER in my mind. Outdid maiden,  in this department. Replaced KK very easily with some Zakk hack. Not cool with me Priest, not cool at all. I am jumping ship on the final tour of my favourite band of all time. rest in peace, priest. RIPP...... This tour should be cancelled out of respect for KK. I have played music myself for 30 years, and I dont buy all the bullshit that I am fed. Give me a break. Something pissed him off, and whoever is the culprit, should be tossed out on their asses for this. THEY are not bigger than the priest itself.  To me, as a long term priest fan as well as MANY other bands that I supported by NOT downloading material off internet to avoid the cost of buying albums, I supported full out by buying everything I could through commercial avenues. For the bands I loved in the day. Selling out, settling for some hack guitarist to replace a guitar great, not for me. You guys sold out, you dissapointed me, you disrespected something that is FAR bigger than you are all. Priest is a core group, they cannot be replaced at a whim. I am very dissapointed it must end this way, and no longer respect the british way if its always the easy way out like  it was. No audiotion, word from one guitarist  you wanted that this guy is good. Damn, I take more painstaking time on my own  small level recordings than you did with this. shame on you priest. Im pissed and ashamed you sold out like this. Must be a management issue if it has this must influence. You guys should be calling the shots at this point, not some suit piece of shit.

Even if it is not a great album you have to give them a break. I mean they're almost 60, be happy they are still touring. Even if you listen to Iron Maiden's new album The Final Frontier. To me it does not sound very good, but to large fans of Maiden, who will buy the album, it sounds good. Large fans of Judas Priest will buy this new album, and we will think it sounds good.

Since I don't know you, I guessed a couple of excuses for a female fan. 
I did mention as being afraid of going alone as an example of excuses at the end of my first post.
Didn't you read about a courageous nearly blind man make it to HALFORD as an example of not being afraid of going alone?

Speaking of meeting fellow JP fans, I shared a cab  with a boy nearly a half my age back to my hotel after a Priest show in '09 at the Molson Amphitheatre in Toronto, Canada flying from Japan to witness the historic British Steel Anniversary tour. We just talked like we were in a same age group.
Honestly speaking, BS is not my top favorite album and I prefer other albums but I felt I gotta experience this historic moment. I made a trip myself.
This trip gave me good excuse to work a little harder. I'm not rich at all, man.
When I bought a one day commuter ticket at a train station in Eaton Centre, the hot looking clerk who sold me the ticket said he was going to the show, too. 
He gave me some tips about getting the concert ticket.

Good unexpected thing happen when you try, such as getting a stick from Scott at the end of the show in exchange of a small present, a pair of socks w/ Japanese 
kabuki style design on them. I learned he threw it away on a stage afterword and that was a little bit shocking but my point was a thing like that could be useful on touring coz you get sweaty on the tour bus.  LOL

ANW, there are lots of diehards who won't miss JP shows for the world. Don't you make excuses, Bazooka Joe or I'll troll you around on the Quorum. LOL

As for JP working on new material, the guys only announed the end of World tour and didn't say they'll retire. If you take the announcement literally, there's not much of a doubt they want to create some more. These guys have so much energy and creativity left and they can't stop their creativity. 
Just trust the guys, and wait for news in an old fashioned way. Fans these days are spoiled due to the age of Internet. Just wait and see.

Thanks for the encouragement HRMG!!!!  I'm truly counting the minutes until they announce the Canadian/Toronto dates....I must say, it's nice to have a place to bounce your thoughts/comments, so I'm loving the noticeboard, but can't wait to get official status, and wear the big girl pants LOL...I don't mind going alone to a JP concert, but sometimes ya just wanna connect with people from the mothership...

You are NEVER alone at a Priest show - EVER! It doesn't matter if you walk in alone, you will always walk out talking to many other fans that love this band just as much as you do. You will find yourself singing along with everyone around you and you will have the time of your life! So most definitely go and you will have the experience of a lifetime! Priest live will make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up on end and you will be in absolute awe of how incredible they sound live!

Things that I've heard people that never saw Rob sing live before after HALFORD performed at Ozzfest and opening for Ozzy last year: "Rob had me at his first scream!" "I know they call him The Metal God, but now I KNOW WHY! HOLY SHIT!" and of course just a ton of awed expressions. Whoa, man, it had nothing to do with kids or living in remote parts of the world...as a teenager/20-somethinger I lived in house where metal was considered the devil, literally.  I had to hide crappy cassettes that I made by recording stuff off the radio, and tape them to the back of my furniture with the hopes that no one would find them.  When they were found, they got tossed after rather unpleasant confrontations.  By the time I moved out (or rather, BOLTED in my late 20's) none of my friends or colleagues were into metal, so my JP-ness stayed in the closet for years...until now, at 43, and if that makes me a loser, TOO FREAKING BAD...'cause life is too freakin' short and I gotta be who I am....even if my 10-year-old daughter and husband think I'm a wackjob headbanger (they are into dance music, help me now, but at least I let my kid listen to what she likes!)  So even if I go alone when they come, and get stuck banging my head solo with my fist in the air alone, I'm going to see Priest.

I was thinking more about folks who live in an accessible place, Not New Zealand or Guatemala.

If a fan lives in a remote country as an example, one could have tried to save for years. 
For example, it's been about 7 years since Rob came home. If one could have saved $200 / year ($20/ month), it's like $1400 saved since then.
That's enough for international airfare. One can also earn mileage from usage of credit cards if the cards offer such benefits.
If fans really want to go to concerts of their favorite bands, it's good to try to figure out to make it comes true.

My first JP concert was Operation Rock N' Roll in Dallas. I was a backseat driver from Austin. 8  hours round trip. We didn't even stay overnight there.
The next show was the reunion at the Budokan. It took more than a decade to witness them w/ Rob again.
Ever since experiencing the long wait, I tried to catch JP concert at least once. 

As close to witnessing 100 concerts of all kinds of bands over 2 decades, Judas Priest's concerts are the best for me. John Sykes is as great as JP.

Well easier said than done if, like me, you live in a country that is isolated from other places and you HAVE to travel by air, which is a bummer if you can't afford international flights.
Having said that I am seeing Priest sometime this year come hell or high water.

What kind of excuse do you have not to go to a JP concert? Family? Kids? There are daycare centers, baby sitters.
Work? Use a paid holiday or just simply say "I'm sick" just for one day. 
Money? You can wait to buy CDs or put on hold to buy a couple of new clothes. 
Every concert is different as Rob says in an interview.

If JP doesn't come to your neighborhood, make a trip. Can't afford airfare? Go by bus. Can't afford bus fare? Ask your buddy to give you a ride.

As I mentioned in my MoM tour experience, I saw a nearly blind guy coming to a Nagoya show himself. 
It must have been hard for him to make it there but he tried. 
Lots of Japanese diehard JP fans are not afraid to go to shows by themselves. Not experiencing JP concerts is simply painful.

Been to other concerts? Well, if you haven't seen Judas Priest live, you ain't seen nothing yet.

When I listen to Rob's voice over the last 30-odd years, I don't say it has changed, it's more like it has evolved...what this guy can do is absofreakinlutely mystical.  The power, versatility and range is nothing short of a God-given gift.  The fact that JP is still out there melting faces and eardums of the faithful after all these years is proof enough of what they can do.  Nothing they put out can disappoint!!!!!  NEVER NEVER NEVER!!!!!  P.S.  I am a JP concert ""virgin"', so after waiting to see them for 25 years, they better come to the ACC in Toronto or I'll die!!!!!!!!!!!
