(our home games this season will be televised for the first time, hip hip hooray!!!)

Thanks for the nice words on Danish Hockey, but have you seen them play?? LOL ... Sorry, I am patriotic I promise, but playing the final against Canada? Not in my life time Im afraid. Denmark did beat USA 5-2 back in 2003,  back when no one knew about us (our first year in the A group) and they played 2-2 against Canada, but since then ... not so much :o)

Now about Islanders, I have to brag that Frans Nielsen is Danish :o) I think its our first NHL player ever GO FRANS !!

SOY - I DON'T THINK I TOLD YOU THIS STORY.

I FIREMAN FRIEND OF MINE KEPT TELLING ME ABOUT THIS GUY HE WORKED WITH WHO HAD A SON WHO WAS PRETTY GOOD AT HOCKEY. THIS IS GOING BACK 5-6 YEARS AGO. YEAH EVERY ONE KNOWS SOMEONE WHO IS PRETTY GOOD AT SOMETHING. ESPECIALLY SPORTS.

ANYWAY HE KEPT TELLING ME THIS KID WAS GOOD HE IS GOING TO MAKE IT SOMEDAY. THE GUY LOST TOUCH WITH HIS FRIEND AND STOPPED TALKING ABOUT HIM.

ABOUT A YEAR LATER I WATCHING THE ISLANDERS LOSE TO THE CANADIANS 2-0 AND A KID FROM LONG ISLAND, NEW YORK SCORED BOTH GOALS.

THE NEXT DAY WERE TALKING HOCKEY AT THE GYM AND I TOLD HIM THE ISLANDERS LOST 2-0 THE NIGHT BEFORE AND A LOCAL KID NAMED CHRIS HIGGINS SCORED BOTH GOALS.

HE SAYS THAT IS THE KID I WAS TELLING YOU ABOUT, HIS FRIENDS SON.

I GUESS YOU NEVER KNOW.

ANYWAY I LIKE CANDAIANS AND THERE ARE PROBABLY AS MANY CANADIANS ON THE ISLANDERS AS THERE ARE ON THE CANADIENS. SO LET'S ALL ROOT FOR THE CANADIANS ON THE ISLANDERS.

One month and the NHL season opens. Its the best time of the year. Beautiful crisp weather, sunny days with low humidity. Brisk Nights! The opening of the NHL season and playoff baseball. A fire in the yard and of course Judas Priest blowing through the speakers. A little Jack Daniels or a cold Belgian Ale! And a chance to root hard for my Mets  to win the world series and my Islanders to get off to a good start. Probably only to be disappointed twice. But I'll be enjoying every minute if it.

Hey if I didn't root for the Mets and Islanders, I'd still have my fire on a nice night, Jack or a beer while listening to Priest.

Don't get better than that.

You are right!!  You don't really hear about too many NHL player incidents outside the rink (inside is another story).  NFL has to be the way it is now, their players are out of control!!!
David Stern and the NBA could learn some lessons from the NHL and the NFL.

BE GLADE. Be very glade hockey isn't as big as football and baseball  is here in the states. I love hockey and right now if i want tickets i can get them. Football is always sold out, or shitty seats and better viewed on t.v.. And baseball is just too slow moving as a sport? Hockey has class. The players that represent the sport are respectable on and off the ice. And they sure are TOUGHER. Although some of the rappers are starting to wear hockey jerseys, it's nothing to get worried about. They like the colors and logos not the team? We will not even discuss basketbrawl... The sport where you can choke your coach and still be treated like a star?

Believe it or not, ALL pro sport contracts (in America) have CONDUCT clauses.  The problem is that they are rarely enforced except in the most grievous cases of deviant behavior.
Most teams wait to see if the player is found guilty in the courts first, then react.  How many athletes are convicted of wrongdoing?
Another problem are GUARNTEED contracts.  Teams sign a player and give them "UP FRONT" money that counts against this years salary cap with remaining years at a lower amount.  They player already has the bulk of the cash!!!
I really don't want to get into ROOKIE contracts, especially when in comes to the NFL.  It's ridiculous!!!
I will say, however, that of ALL the major sports leagues in America, the NFL under Commissioner Roger Goodell, he is much the disciplinarian and DOES hold players accountable for there actions (whether found guilty or not in the courts), and usually doles out his discipline BEFORE there is even a judges verdict.

You know what would be nice in their contracts? While employed by team, any team, employee must not be involed with anything to do with law enforcement on or off the field. If so contract becomes voided. No $$$. They are like children that never grew up. Football and baseball lead the pack in spoiled grown men. Hockey isn't too far behind. Wouldn't it be nice if you had to prove yourself in the pros, before you are payed like a pro?

Speaking of the Red Wings, Chris Chelios brought the Stanley Cup to Wrigley Field with him on friday.  He was there to throw out the "first" pitch (he had to throw a second, as the first one went way over the catcher's head).

He also sang "Take Me Out To The Ballgame" during the 7th inning stretch.

Also, you'll never guess who the "Honorary" catcher was (for the 1st pitch)...Eddie Vedder!!!!!

Next round is on me, Soy.  Since when did in become fashionable for "players" to hold "teams" and their "fans" hostage?  I think football (NFL) players are the worst, with players "holding out", which is just another form of holding a team "hostage".
With the kind of $$$ being thrown at professional athletes, ideals like a)Honoring your signed contract b)Being "on-time" to the teams schedule c)Morals, are out the window.
It's a "ME FIRST" world we live in.  And the more $$$ that's out there, the more it's about the individual!!!
Just my opinion.

TEAMS FOLLOWING THE RED WINGS LEAD (IF IN FACT THEY DID DO THIS AS REPORTED) AND TELL MATS SUNDIN AND HIS AGENT THEY'RE NO LONGER INTERESTED. GO JUMP IN THE LAKE,WE'VE WAITED LONG ENOUGH AND THIS GAME IS GETTING TIRESOME!!!....THIS TREND OF SPORTS FIGURES MAKING TEAMS AND FANS ALIKE WAIT A RIDICULOUS AMOUNT OF TIME TO DECIDE WHERE THEY'LL PLAY IS ABSOLUTE %$#!!$##@%$!!! I wouldn't say 1000 times better although I could understand the game being played in Montral for that reason. Here in the states Hockey is like heavy metal. It doesn't get the respect it deserves. But, the ones who do enjoy it live and die for it. When the first week of October comes around i revolve my lifes schedule around the islanders schedule.  As for the Ranger/Islander rivalry - I think it is better than the yankee/red sox rivalry. Baseball is bigger here so yankees/red sox gets more press. Hockey may not be as popular here and Canada is the true home of hockey, but the fans who do like it here are very passonate. LONG LIVE HOCKEY, LONG LIVE CANADA FOR GIVING US HOCKEY AND LONG LIVE HEAVY METAL.

ACTUALLY MY FRIEND IF BETTMAN DIDN'T HAVE HIS HEAD UP THE GOOD 'OL BOYS ASSES SOUTH OF US,THERE IS NO DOUBT THE GAME SHOULD HAVE BEEN PLAYED IN MONTREAL...
IT'S THE TEAMS 100th ANNIVERSARY...BUT HEY,THAT WOULD MAKE SENSE AND ANY LEGIT HOCKEY FAN KNOWS BETTMAN DOESN'T UNDERSTAND THING 1 ABOUT TRADITION IN THIS FINE LEAGUE...CHICAGO,NOBODY IN THAT CITY REALLY GIVES A CRAP ABOUT THAT TEAM...
IT'S JUST ANOTHER FAILED ATTEMPT (AND MONEY GRAB) TO TRY TO GET AMERICAN FANS ON BOARD...AND IT AIN'T GONNA WORK...OTHER THAN A SELECT FEW MARKETS,AMERICANS DON'T GIVE A FLYING F#@K ABOUT HOCKEY,THAT'S A FACT  NO MATTER HOW MUCH SPIN THE COUNT FROM SESAME STREET (BETTMAN) WANTS TO PUT ON IT...AT LEAST,IF NOT MORE THAN 40% OF THE FANS AT LAST YEARS OUTDOOR GAME WERE CANADIAN...(AT LEAST 40%)!!!
BOWLING GETS HIGHER RATINGS IN THE STATES THAN HOCKEY!...AND THAT'S JUST FINE WITH ME....THE GAME IS FROM HERE AND IT WILL ALWAYS BE EMBRACED HERE, UNLIKE MOST OF THE MARKETS SOUTH OF US THAT HAVE TEAMS.....BUT TRY TO EXPLAIN THAT TO THE COUNT AND HE JUST DOES HIS STUPID LITTLE SMIRK AND SHRUG,THEN PROCEEDS TO TWIST THE COLD HARD FACTS...TIME TO GO BETTMAN YOUR REIGN OF IDIOCY SHOULD BE ENDED.
AND AS FOR THE ISLANDER- RANGER RIVALRY, YEAH IT EXISTS,BUT MONTREL-TORONTO IS A THOUSAND TIMES MORE APPROPRIATE FOR SUCH A GAME.

I see that the Blackhawks and Red Wings are playing the outdoor game this year in Wrigley field.  With Yankee Stadium closing down this year they should have had the Islanders and Rangers play there this year.

The  Islanders and Rangers may be one of the best 2 or 3 rivalries in all of sports.  Could you imagine being a Rangers fan and not wnning a cup since 1940 and along come the islanders and win 4 in their first 11 years of existance?
[Soylentgreen4u] Friday, July 04, 2008 10:35:33 PM
YES,MGDMAN....SINCE YOU ARE A HOCKEY FAN,YOU KNOW ALL TOO WELL,THAT THIS CAN HAPPEN EASILY...WITH FREE AGENCY,THE MONEY BEING THROWN AROUND AND THE SOMEWHAT LACK OF LOYALTY...THE YEARS OF THE HABS OF THE 70'S...ISLANDERS AND THE OILERS OF THE EIGHTIES ARE LONGGGGGGGG GONE...THIS MAY SOUND STRANGE TO YOU,BUT I HOPE THAT NEW RUSSIAN LEAGUE IS SUCCESSFUL...REASON BEING,PERHAPS IF SOME OF THESE PLAYERS BOLT OVER THERE,(LIKE JAGR DID TODAY!)MAYBE IT'LL SMARTEN THIS LEAGUE UP...FACT OF THE MATTER IS ALMOST ALL THE U.S. TEAMS ARE LOSING MONEY...CANADIAN ARENAS ARE FULL EVERY GAME...THAT'S JUST THE REALITY OF IT...I MEAN EVEN ORIGINAL SIX TEAMS ARE LOSING MONEY,I.E.,BOSTON,CHICAGO,THERE WERE EVEN MORE THAN A FEW EMPTY SEATS EARLY ON IN THE PLAYOFFS IN DETROIT...TOO MANY TEAMS AND THE FINANCES ARE JUST NOT WORKING...GET RID OF BETTMAN THAT WOULD BE A FINE START!

Good points. I agree you need someone in the room to be a leader with experience. Key losses will also keep them out. You may be right they may not get in the playoffs! They just seemed to start to gel in the finals a little, back to the early rounds?!

PITTSBURGH WILL NOT BE BACK IN THE FINALS...LOST TWO GOOD CANADIAN BOYS ON THAT TEAM....THAT PROVIDED THE GRIT AND CHARACTER YOU NEED TO GO FAR IN THE PLAYOFFS...ROBERTS,GONE...LARACQUE,GONE(HOWEVER MY TEAM GOT HIM,SO I'M THRILLED).
PLUS MALONE LEFT ALSO...YOU CAN THROW MONEY AY SCORING PLAYERS ALL YOU WANT,BUT WITHOUT KEY CHARACTER IN THE ROOM,NOT TO MENTION TOUGHNESS,YOU DON'T WIN..AS A MATTER OF FACT,DON'T EVEN BE SURPRISED IF THE PENS DON'T EVEN MAKE THE PLAYOFFS NEXT YEAR.....NO,I'M NOT CUCKOO,THESE TYPES OF THINGS HAVE HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES BEFORE. WHAT?....ME CUCKOO?......
[mgdman] Thursday, July 03, 2008 8:59:41 PM
I'm a huge Redwings fan! But I also follow the Pens so this years final was a great thing for me. I wanted the wings to win it because as young as the Pens are i think they have several cup titles in their future!
