Please discuss impact of spirituality and "the devil" on Priest, metal and pop rock culture

Dudes all I was lookin' for was a little hope. When Hot Rockin Metal Goddess said the boys never sold their soul to the devil a warm glow came over me (and I'm not incontintent). It is not what we do but how and why we do it. Love y'all.

I just looked up icono(c)lastic.
Man, you know me better than I do and I'm me.(LOL)
Now you have me analyzing myself and I think you're dead on with
you're assumptions.
First Freeze had me doing it, then Jimmy did (and he pretty much changed the way I do everything here),
and now you. Good or bad, you guys are educating me on myself.
In all sincerity, I like it. It helps me. Peace!
Hate to break it to you but Satan probably doesn't want you Budred because you don't seem like the type to be properly broken. I suspect your biting, sarcastic humor and iconolastic individualism would never really kiss his nasty, unwashed ass. It would be like a bad marriage where you would take half upon divorce and than Lucifer would need self-estem and anger management therapy.

If you're into religion this will probably scare the "Priest" right out of you.
If you're like me you'll just say "Please"!!! It's not devil music, it's freakin' marketing. (Satan sells)(LOL)

I'm just glad you see it as sarcastic humor because that's all it is.
I wouldn't sell my soul to the devil, I just don't believe he exists.(my beliefs only, not to be imposed upon anyone.)
You sum me up pretty good. I really do think you are smart, we just share different beliefs. [Show/Hide Quoted Message](Quoting Message by heimda11 from Wednesday, July 20, 2011 1:31:05 PM)

We all change as we stroll through life. I understand your perspective bro. Considered myself a culturally relativistic, secular humanist most of my life, and always will be to a large degree. But spiritual commitments and then a personal encounter with the Almight foster more personal change. There is sooo much to discuss so I'll try to keep it simple. I can't separate the artist from the art and hope to find the core value of a modicum of self-respect in a few artists. Modicum of self-respect is VERY loosely defined. I will choose to patronize those artists. (Regarding the hawkish dialogue, pardon, its more a gauntlet being thrown at the devil's minions, a challenge from here to eternity.)

My parents were very cool, thankfully! But my brothers broke them in for me, LOL! They let us listen to anything we wanted as long as it wasn't too loud. We were all good students and didn't get into trouble, so I'm sure that helped. The only time anything was said was when my dad found out that Priest was being sued. I read the lyrics to my dad and he agreed that the lawsuit was bullshit and that was that. But metal will always find a way - you proved that!! Way to stick to your guns!
I agree about Priest's lyrics - they are very powerful and they have helped me get through many hard times in my life. They have always written straight from the heart and their songs go much deeper than other bands.
Really, eh, HRMG!!! I fought for years with my mom about metal. I tried explaining lyrics to her, but all she heard was the crap people like Tipper Gore ranted about. I couldn't keep any metal in the house. I used to record stuff off the radio onto cassettes and then tape them to the back of my dresser. When she found my Black Sabbath tapes she went bonkers! The funny thing was that I wrote a huge paper in university on the parallels between heavy metal and late-classical period music, 16 pages including musical exerpts, and got an A+. The reason I loved Priest so much was that they never 'sexualized' women in a demeaning way. It was always about music, rockin' out and ridin' free!! I love their lyrics, to me they are some, if not THE most powerful metal lyrics out there.

Me too Metalgodess!! Going to Catholic school and being a metalhead at the age of 12 was not a good combination, since I was the one they always pointed at when they talked about "devil music"! Then in high school during jean and t-shirt days, I ALWAYS wore my Priest t-shirts. Got quite the look from a lot of my teachers at first, but then they just got used to it, LOL!
As for JP and spirituality, I know that Rob is very spiritual. I'm sure the boys danced with the devil a bit during their heyday, but they never sold their soul to him. They are all good men, IMO and their musical message has always been a positive one.

Right on, Hellrider. I've had to defend being a good Catholic girl and loving metal to too many people. It gets annoying after a while LOL.

Awesome! Don't mean to geek out but my faith in humanity occasionally gets rattled.

It would be more fun for all of us to rap in person over a few brews!
Music is the easiest catalyst for peak human experience and performance. I suspect different sounds and vibrations can empower us in various ways. (Beginning to realize speaking in tongues or the drums and bagpipes before battle are all part of this hyper acuity.) Plants apparently grow better in classical music, so why do WE need metal!?
