Yeah D.O.E.,the Fatal Portrait tour was awsome dude, here is a picture from that tour man,it was amazing because all the material he played was from obviously "Mercyful Fate" and just the new album at the time 'Fatal Portrait"!!!
It was totally elite now I look back on it.There were bible bashers outside the Moore Theatre giving out pamplets on christianity begging us metal heads not to attend his show,.....we all laughed I remember and were wearing upsidedown crosses, bullet belts and black leather jackets...LOL! Good times!!!

I'm glad my advice worked out J.D.!
Here's another NWOBHM period band, these guys hail from Canada though:
DEAF DEALER KEEPER OF THE FLAME 1986
Very good Heavy Metal, pretty straight forward with great instrumental potential as well as a good and engaging vocalist. If you're a sucker for twin guitar soloing, here's a fix! I think that those are the band's best 7 albums only in my opinion though, they just seem to fall into place with my style and likings.
I can't get into the band's first album "1984 Gates To Purgatory"....2nd album 1985 "Branded And Exiled" 4th album 1988 "Port Royal"and the band's last 3 albums from year 2000 till 2005 "Victory"..........."Brotherhood"........and "Rogues En Vogue". Those 6 albums I just can't get into, they bug me too much, very different from the other 7 I like.
I've gone over them tooth and nail so many times, and I just can't seem to like them,so at least I've found 7 albums by Running Wild that I do enjoy, thanks to YOU D.O.E.! Thanks my friend for directing me towards this band!

Blood On Ice just played here last night, actually! I still prefer Twilight of the Gods, because even if his voice wasn't as toned and perfected there, the songs connect deeper with me. But Blood On Ice is an incredible album as well, we're talking of the very first league of Viking Metal here!
Funny you should mention the first four albums... It's the period I don't know that well... YET! I started with Blood Fire Death and have been checking them out from that landmark!
Fenriz of Darkthrone suggesting Heavy Metal? Did the Norse hit his head somewhere? Just kidding, I respect Fenriz!

Have you ever heard Bathory "Blood On Ice"? It have the same vocals as Twilight, but the music is alittle better even I thought.
Manilla Road I have heard because "Fenriz" of Darkthrone suggested this album before. Interesting album for 1983.

About my suggestion for RITUAL, please don't take it as an order, didn't mean for it to sound like it. Re Bethe's guitar style takes a while to sink in, at first his licks and solos sound a bit confused, but once you've listened to the albums a few times, you start to understand where he's going.
I've been listening to this more and more, lately:
BATHORY TWILIGHT OF THE GODS 1991
This is the perfect Viking era Bathory album. Its is grandiose in its atmosphere, simply jaw-dropping. So if you like more epic sounding themes in music, here's a perfect treat for you!
The only thing against it is Quorthon's voice, even though it is clean, he still hadn't quite learned how to control it yet. I like it but it might be a detractor if you don't like less-than-perfect vocals.

I have at least around 70 different metal bands...ranging from hard rock/heavy metal.....to heavy metal...to death, speed, thrash and black metal....all thier original CDs,I would have to count them though! lol!
I am VERY NARROW-MINDED when it comes to music.I don't like "a little bit of everything"(like 95% of people do)...no,I onnly like hard rock, and metal but only the traditional way,no trends.I don't go out of my way to be like this,I just like what I like ya know?(lol!) I don't look down on people who "do like a little bit of everything"...but when I tell them I only like hard rock the classic style(AC/DC...Sabbath)and metal traditional metal...they kinda look at me like I am weird. As I have said MG,I admit I am a very narrow-minded person when it comes to music! lol!

RUNNING WILD UNDER JOLLY ROGER 1987
This band sucks throughout thier career in my opinion, but this album is the only listenable album from Running Wild to me,its still not that "great" but the vocalist does not try and whale operetic vocals on this album, its more of a mid-range Paul Di Anno (when Paul is not screaming in high pitch)type of vocal style. And the songs are ok,not giving this album an "A" in grading but rather a C+.Still,a worthy "heavy metal album" with no thrash qualities here, just heavy metal.
Not one of my favorite albums, but as I mentioned..a little cheesy, but a worthy heavy metal album I guess. |

Dude, "Killers" is indeed one of the greatest Iron Maiden albums. Paul Di'Anno is such an underrated singer. I'm a big fan of all the stuff Iron Maiden put out during the Di'Anno era, but I also love the material Di'Anno released during his solo career. Some of this solo stuff, like the 1992 "Murder One" album pictured above, is top notch.
Check out these two terribly underrated songs:

lol! Right on Hellrider that is awsome! I on the other hand need multiple metal bands to compleate my metal fix ...kind of like assembling all the metal pieces to create a metal monster! lol! But I do understand your need for only Judas Priest. To bad they had to drop "Nostradamus" on us in a time when you need "METAL" the most...3 years and counting after the release of the magnificent metal driven - "Angel Of Retribution"!!!!

I forgot "AC/DC on that heavy metal and rock list. [Show/Hide Quoted Message] (Quoting Message by J.D. DIAMOND from Friday, April 17, 2009 5:16:33 PM) | | J.D. DIAMOND wrote: | | DelivererofEvil,I agree with you for the most part here. I do not like very many death metal bands, but I do like some.Vader is a death metal band but they are just not my cup of tea,but to each his own. I think that the most interesting death metal bands are 2 bands...thier old stuff..."DEICIDE" and "MORBID ANGEL".....both old albums only.
Deicide's first 4 studio albums..Deicide,Legion,Once Upon The Cross and Serpents Of The Light (1990-1997)are the best.Anything after that,I don't like except for the 5th album Insinneratehymn is ok at time, but not as good as the first 4. Morbid Angel's first 5 albums kick ass(1989-1998)..after that they suck.
Old school Black Metal is far more interesting to me than any death metal. But I don't like any "new" black metal bands that come out....the scene is dead and too many bands are just dressing up for an excuse to wear corpse paint and makeup.
It used to be something hidden and underground/elite back in the early-mid 1990's. I have been into black metal since 1984 when I first hear Venom's At War With Satan album,Mercyful Fate "Don't Break The Oath" album,Bathory,Celtic Frost,Slayer,Possessed....I was into these black metal bands back in the day,and all the way into the early 1990's...except I did'nt hear of the Norwegian scene untill 1993 when the death of Euronymous was in metal magazines.I then ordered Darkthrone's Under A Funeral Moon(1993) from a Hit Parader mag in 1994 I think it was... lol! And then Mayhem,Emperor,ect...so I have been into this genre basically since Venom started it.
So I have been into "smaller bands" since day one man. I really do not like the majority of heavy metal bands...for instance "Running Wild" I only like "Under Jollly Roger".Rolf Kasperek's vocals are cool on this album, but they are different on the next album "Port Royal" at least they are to me...he seemed to go off on an operetic frenzy from that album on....I just do not care for the songs themselves ..I'm not saying that they are not heavy metal but I just don't like them that much.I guess its like "food"...some of us eat something and love it..others puke it up and can't stand it,no different and no one's opinion is the right opinion,we all just like what we like.
The heavy metal...heavy metal/rock and heavy metal/thrash(not pure thrash but heavy metal thrash) bands that I like and own are:
Black Sabbath
Judas Priest
Motorhead
Saxon
Iron Maiden
Ozzy (Blizzard Of Oz/Diary Of A Madman/Bark At The Moon and No Rest For The Wicked only!
Dio/Heaven & Hell
Pentagram
Old Metallica (I consider them heavy metal)
Exciter
Hallow's Eve
Agent Steel(Skeptics Apocalypse album)
Running Wild(Under Jolly Roger album only)
King Diamond
Deathrow(a band from Germany in the 80's)
Iced Earth(Iced Earth album and Night Of The Stormrider only)
So there are about 16 bands that are heavy metal in one way or another that I like.

Being narrow minded helps you fight the banalization of music spreading like a disease.
I for one fight for my Heavy Metal, even if I won't ostracize other kinds of music. Still we're debating Heavy Metal here:
I don't listen to all types of metal. I can't bear to listen through most Death bands, not a big fan of cookie monster vocals. The only one that kept my interest - and I listen to it every once in a while, not on a regular basis - would be VADER. Fuckin' loved their sound and Pete's vocals aren't as inintelligible as that. I also confess that I haven't delved deep into the style, but again, we'll get there on the why nots further on.
I am a HUGE fan of Heavy Metal, plain and simple and Hard Rock. Most of the music I listen to comes from before the 90s, before I was born, because I simply can't connect to these new kinds of metal that popped up during my decade, such as Death/Dooms, then the Thrashcores, and other such cr*p such as "x"-cores and NO-Metal.
Give me the NWOBHM anytime, I've been digging up bands that have laid there forgotten for ages, such as Bronz, Praying Mantis, Aragorn, Angelwitch, Picture, Black Widow, Ritual, Brocas Helm, Medieval Steel and there's loads and loads more to discover. And this is what I want to get across as a point for my first sentence.
There's wat too much music now on the internet for you to listen to all of it, and most of it isn't worth your time. So stick to what you specially like, dig into the archives for those records and bands of a period you particularly like, and support the bands that still preach the Heavy Metal Faith to this day. And I don't mean just the PRIEST or MAIDEN. I mean the smaller bands. For example, here in Portugal we have a decent scene, but it is populated by Death/Grind/Black Metal. If you're lucky you'll get some Thrash concerts every now and then, and quite a lot of punk. But when it comes to Heavy Metal, the visible fans, those who lend their faces to showing their love for it, can be counted on the fingers of hands and toes out of a scene of thousands!
For instance, I know for a fact that while the 80s generation still has some (now respectable sirs) supporters, my generation is a desert for the original form of our favourite music!
So yeah, NARROW MINDED for the win! I'll listen to samples of other stuff from time to time and if someone recommends a band to me, I'll check it out, many times just to get arguments to refute that band. But it has happened that I opened exceptions to the rule and there's quite a few bands that I can enjoy, from time to time. On my daily life I eat Heavy Metal from sun to sun and into the night!
This is the attitude that has gone missing in most scenes, people are getting too comformist, turning into sheep that follow the latest trends when barely 10 years ago each of us strived to be unique!
Wow, long rant to the sound of Rainbow In The Dark, but I hope I managed to get my point across!

DelivererofEvil,I agree with you for the most part here.

Hey J.D.
Sorry, but I'll have to disagree with you there. Running Wild are one of the most consistent heavy metal bands that hailed from Germany. Give a try to "Port Royal" or "Death or Glory"! There's nothing about being operatic there, just plain and simple heavy metal pirate themed on Port Royal and simply mind blowing on Death or Glory.
Also, their earlier albums like Branded and Exiled are nothing but Heavy Metal straight to the vein! I love this band, and yes, their sound didn't vary that much from the 1980s to now, but it's still far above average if you ask me!
Rock n Rolf isn't the best singer in town, that I concede. But he's a perfectly able guitarist, give a try to Conquistadores, Uaschitschun, basically any song up to Pile of Skulls.
Still, Under Jolly Roger is a DAMN great album! [Show/Hide Quoted Message] (Quoting Message by J.D. DIAMOND from Wednesday, April 15, 2009 5:53:57 PM) | | J.D. DIAMOND wrote: | |

(lol!) Thanks hellrider my friend "THE HELLRIDER"!!!!!!!!!! I love that name!!!!!!!! And the perfect most metalheaded member has it!!
You as well as I are two metalheads that can't get enough of "metal" like a drug or something like that, its very addictive and very rewarding!
Once I heard and saw the Video "Heading Out To The Highway" in 1981 when MTV first started,I was shocked at how great this band was....and then a year later came Screaming For Vengeance and it almost literately blew my fuckin mind!!! The image, the sound,Judas Priest in general..it all just knocked my head into metal submission!! I've been the same ever since,I know that other styles of music can also be rewarding in its own way,but I can never cross over that bridge...its metal for life hellrider!!!!!!!! Hell yeah!!

Candlemass's glorious debut album, with Johan Lanquist on vocals (a superb singer, their best to date). For fans of the Heavy Metal on the doomy tradition of Sabbath, this is a jewel and a must-have, since Candlemass, along with Sabbath and Pentagram (that came earlier) founded the Doom Metal movement. No goth crap, just 100 % DOOM HEAVY METAL! |

Yes Joe,I like Immortal(lol)...I know they may look rather silly at times, but they are serious about thier Norwegian styled black metal. And yes,I'm supprised that they don't have 100 words for snow!
I've been an Immortal fan for almost 15 years. They are part of the original scene at Oslo Norway with Oystein Aarseth(aka Euronymous).Immortal is very important within the realm of black metal. But I want to know...where the hell is the new album from them?(lol)!
Abbath & co. fuckin smoke man, long live Immortal!

aceroperuano I bought this album along with a few others in 1997 from blackmetal.com! This album is one of the 3 most black evil albums I have ever heard.
Mayhem's 1993 "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas"...... Darkthrone's 1994 "Transilvanian Hunger"......and Emperor's 1994 "In The Nightside Eclipse".

Not your classic Heavy Metal band, or album whatsoever, but this album is a cornerstone in what black metal represents and is all about, is a minimalistic, raw, dark, evil, cold, simple yet effective in projecting malificense, uncountable copycats norwegian black metal bands tried to emulate this sound and to capture his aura, almost all failed, today the bands is oriented into a more black/punk metal sound, a crust/speed satanic and rock and roll oriented metal if you prefere, what is still of my like.

Only if Tony and Geezer had compleate control over what the sound should be,and the songs ect..ect...if they did'nt,it would turn out to be way to far off I'm afraid.Ozzy is just to distracted to think straight about "metal". Just like what we were talking about, look at what he did with his last album,he totally changed the sound/style of "Ozzy"...it used to be and sound like the upper tuned guitar classic british style back in the day and now he changes the sound to what the new "Ozzfest" fans are listening to these days,down-tuned rappy-tunnel hat-like sound.Your right though,he can still sing but his mind is to far gone I'm afraid.

MOTORHEAD INFERNO 2004
Well, technically Motorhead is not "heavy metal" but rather "greasy- biker-rock"(lol!) ...raw rock-n-roll but they always seem to "fit" into a "traditional british heavy metal style" as we all know,so I'm claiming Motorhead's 2004 album Inferno as your classic heavy metal album of the day!! All Motorhead albums are valid, some more than others as one would expect out of the band's 19 studio album career...but Inferno ranks up there right along Ace Of Spades and Iron Fist as one of the band's best albums!!! Enjoy!

That's actually what I said at first too lol! Well hey as I listened to em more, I began to notice a distinction so it became no longer the case for me. If you listen to songs like Dracula and The Coming Curse you'll see he becomes a talent all on his own (classically influenced, too)... that's why he's my favorite vocalist currently (I know how much that can be considered blasphemy lol!!!).
Anyways yeah, Symphony X is the shit. If you like power metal pick up The Odyssey or Paradise Lost. Both are badass CDs. Their singer is also amazing. They actually got a little bit of groove influence too... it might just be me since they do tune down by a full step... [Show/Hide Quoted Message] (Quoting Message by J.D. Yeah the albums with Matt Barlow to me he has a very "Paul Stanley" voice...really Paul Stanley sounding and I think thats what messes with my head, not that Paul Stanley has a bad voice,it's just that to me it does'nt really fit...just an opinion. But I'm sure they are great though.I still like thier first 2 albums the best. | | \m/ Metal Maniac \m/ wrote: | | I can see why you'd say they're hard to get into, it took me three years after buying their greatest hits to fully appreciate them! Gotta love Iced Earth. You may only like the first two, but I love em all (save for the Glorious Burden).

Iced Earth 1992 I've always liked the first 2 albums from Iced Earth, but am not a fan of any other LPs.
This record is a classic and for those traditional styled heavy metal fans who have never heard this, give it a listen....you might like this. |

Awsome album Darth, but it does include a "ballad" in the song "Before The Dawn" found on both "Killing Machine" and "Hell Bent For Leather" albums. No worries, this album is still one of Priest's best LPs.Great Judas Priest material by all means Darth!!! Running Wild is my personal favorite!!

Hell Bent For Leather (aka: Killing Machine) - JP (1979) Arguably one of Priest's best releases ever. From the killer guitar on "HBFL", to the groove of "Burning Up", this album does it all and doesn't include any ballads. The cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Green Manalishi" is classic and is one of the best cover songs ever done. |
