A friend of mine who is a sound engineer was saying that the reason vinyl is a richer sound is that with vinyl, it records all the sound frequencies, even the ones the human ear can not hear. But with CD's only the frequencies humans can hear are recorded.
Not sure how true this is as im not a rocket scientist. |

It depends.
Back in the day, I loved the deep rich sound of a vinyl record played through a tube amp. Warm and fuzzies. Until, of course, your kid brother scratches the crap out of it.
CDs, especially those from the first decade or two of cd-dom, tend to sound tinny. But a lot of remastered CDs sound better to me than original vinyl.
There's no replacement for large album art, and spending hours analyzing a cover. Harder to do when it's less than 1/4 the size.
I also am happy a lot of studios and bands are finally putting out albums in paper packaging. It's better than plastic for the environment, and the CDs take up half the space on my shelf!

| I like both personally. Vinyl is still around and is coming back in vogue. I recently picked up British Steel on vinyl on ebay in great condition. CD's are more convenient, you can take them with you in the car and so on. I am trying to build up my vinyl collection again. |

| Nothing beats the vinyl sound, and nothing beats the CD convenience. I like to collect vinyl myself. I have Pink Floyds Darkside of the Moon on the original release vinyl set that belonged to my dad. I also have Slayer's Live Undead picture disc on vinyl (and CD). |

I like them both. I have alot of vinyl for I used to DJ back in the 80's. I still have all of my DJ equipment, you just can't beat a Tech. 1200 turntable and I have 2. With the technologies out now, you can get a Tascam CD recorder with anolog inputs and the "magic" record button. Plug that into the output of the mixer or better yet - the "tape out" of your receiver and you can "tape" anything you want from the receiver. I combine the 2 and can make real time mixes on cd + insert the track incriments anywhere I like. I think they both have their advantages.
Also, both cd and vinyl can scratch easily so that's a draw. The only medium I have found that is durable is a sound card that you would put into a digital recorder. But then again, you cannot put track incriments into this while recording so you have to play it back through the mixer in real time and burn your disc that way. This does work and the Samson H4 is an excellent digital recorder capable of either 4-track, wave, or MP3 recordings. I have experimented with one of these and bought one the very next day. Great for live recordings. (hint, hint!)  |

Vinyl gets the vote..you get the sound- even if it is scratchy.....the 'buzz' of a decent size cover... the feel of the thing - like its something 'real' not a twatty little 'dick ring' ...cds just suck..... mp3s have their uses

| Vynil, even when I come from the CD/MP3/DVD era I prefere Vynil because of the sound,the feeling it transmit to me, also because it looks kinda cool and because of the covers of the albums, some of them looks like pictures to be framed and put on the wall of your room or any room of the house,are more personal. |

Bonus tracks! That's another advantage of CD - 80mins of space, as opposed to the 45, 50 or 60mins vinyl can hold (depending on groove width etc).
With the right equipment, vinyl can (so, I'm told), on a good day (depending on the quality of the record & production etc) beat CD hands down. It's probably gonna cost you though...

| With a GOOD turntable and an EXCELLENT (read: very expensive) cartridge, vinyl can be a transcendent experience. Providing, of course that the vinyl is in pristine condition. CD's in general have a flatter frequency distribution. Some of the labels that do classical music, like Chandos, get it right and they are fabulous listening. But for rock & roll, a Dual or Technics BELT DRIVE turntable and an affordable but good cartridge like an Audio Technica will give a fantastic listening experience with sonic depth and surprising ambience that you don't get from most CD's. Of course you also need outstanding speakers with a very wide frequency response and sensitive tweeters and a wide midrange. A good equalizer is a good asset if you have one, but if you have a quality pre-amp or receiver that you can use as a pre-amp then you won't need an equalizer. The advantage of an equalizer is that you can use it to correct for acoustic deficiencies in the listening environment, like hardwood floors, heavy drapes, or a small room with sharp echoes. There are other ways to correct those deficiencies but a good equalizer is a quick fix and a short cut. My humble opinion, from an audiophile geek, thank you and have a good day, love & peace out. YES,I DO LIKE THE VINYL EXPERIENCE..PICKED UP A TURNTABLE A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO IN MINT CONDITION ( SONY BRAND...SERVO LOCK/FULLY AUTOMATIC,THE KIND THAT SLIDES OUT LIKE A CD DRAWER WHEN YOU PUSH THE BUTTON) AT A YARD SALE FOR $10!!! UNBELIEVABLE! + A BLUEBOX WITH ABOUT A HUNDRED ALBUMS (FOR FREE) LUCKED OUT BIG TIME I THINK.

It all depends. For chilling out at home i'll always put on the vinyl, it just sounds better, much warmer and more detail. CD's are certainly easier for day to day use.

I have an affinity for Vinyl. It is kind of like an old TV that you actually had to get up and change the channel on. The few pops and undercurrent of a hum.
I have stacks of Vinyl waiting for me to complete a new "old " stereo system so that I may hear them again in all their brilliance!
Sure, I know I could download the majority of it off the web and for free most times, I just want to look at my collection again, embrace the record jacket and any additonal things that came with it. Play those Priest Photo Albums I own. I miss Vinyl in a nostalgic way. |

You can't "shuffle" a vinyl album, like a CD. Listening to the same song selection time & again, or having to get up to change tracks / sides is such a bore.
It does depend on the equipment you have, but taken as a whole, and in my experience CDs do sound much better than vinyl.
Vinyl also runs slightly faster too - or should that be CDs run slightly slower - try it & record the same song (if you have the equipment - ie, an old cassette recorder or vinyl to PC capability) from each format & compare the difference. CDs also tend to be recorded louder than vinyl too.
I've got lots of vinyl albums that I bought in the 80's, but I'd much rather have it all on CD - all the crackling, pops & jumping can get pretty annoying too.
Just my personal preference & observations.

| CD's because they're small - but vinyl for the sound. I miss the depth of vinyl. CD's sound way to sterile. I remember when CD's first came out and it was all about their rating - AAA, ADD, DDD, ADD - jeez- what a mess. |

This is easy, years ago Sony pushed CD's as the answer to great sound. That soon turned to ease of use.Then they came out w/ SACD, which was supposed to sound as good as vinyl. Now they are slowly ditching SACD. Sony is their own worse enemy, they ceated a product whic could be downloaded and now kills their music sales. BTW the last 4-5 yrs now LP'S are the only sales which are growing.
SO Vinyl is the answer. Soundstage, depth, and pure music, all in one package. |

Yep, artwork is important.. and CDs have the temptetion to skip songs or jump right to the lead parts and that kind a kills the atmosphere of the album. Also, CDs might have that ~2 second pause between the songs (sometimes it is faded, sometimes not.. depends on the settings too) but vinyl plays the album like it is ment to be. If there is not supposed to be a pause between the two songs, there will be no pause.
Of course, CDs are much more handy since they are so much smaller and you can play them in a car or whatever... and the sound quality (if mixed right) is a lil' bit better, but I doubt I will hear a difference between Nostradamus LP and CD, played through same amp and speakers.

| A "properly" mixed CD is better by far, but those are few and far between. Check out some Sting CD's for good examples. If done right, the sonic experience is beyond anything an album can produce but so few are willing to invest the time, money or effort to do it right. |
