this album is awsome to say the least! JP have taken Heavey Metal music and music-craftmanship to a new level! Certainly the best album they have ever done

I like the Nostradamus album more and more.. I have listened to it maybe hundred of times already. I really think that this album is very deep, one has to pay attention to the whole story - from the beginning till the end. I realised the strngth of the album these days - I had personal problems connected with my child and the personnel in the kirdengarten and I was in a very bad mood and then I felt a desire to listen to the nostradamus album. I felt a relief - my english is to poor to explain in a good way my feelings in that moment, but I realised that one should be strong to overcome all problems in life.
LONG LIVE JUDAS PRIEST!!!!
love you all fans of JP :-)

Nostradamus contains all the essence of JP's over 30 years of experience. This album was meticulously created & every interlude is needed & used as a guide to the next chapter (song) as if we're reading a book or watching a movie as Rob explained in an interview w/ BURRN! magazine for July issue in Japan.
If you're JP fans, you know JP love trying something new for each album. Why don't we trust the band we like so much?
Glenn has repeatedly said in interviews that he is very proud of this album. Even if there're fans who don't fully accept this one, they will not regret making this album for sure. I've noticed that fans who have been bitching about this album have changed their opinions in Rob's quorum.
Nostradamus has elevated Metal into Art. Genuine master piece & JP's legacy will last eternally!

This album will go down as a masterpiece. It has not even been out 1 month. Everytime I listen to it I hear things I didn't hear the previous times. Everyday I have a different favorite song. As time goes on we will appreciate this album more and more. If we all liked it the first time we listened to it, it would probably be so simple that we would get board with it. There are many great songs on this album and some that you would never take the CD out just to listen to the one song. But the whole of this album is much greater than any individual song. This album was well worth the wait.

[ScottyM] Sunday, July 06, 2008 1:44:42 AM
Music, as musicians, need to evolve. Nostradamus is an evolution of thoughts, ideas, experiences that were carefully crafted and given to us to enjoy (or not). This piece needs to be experienced from start to finish. It is NOT, nor will ever be, a "radio friendly/chock full of singles" piece that people are accustomed to. If you want those, pull out British Steel, Defenders, whatever. I applaude JP for the massive balls it took to craft this , and stick by their work with the record company ('cause I'm sure it raised some eyebrows) to do this. This insures that more headbaggin' metal will come from the Priest in the future.

That they played at the Royal Albert Hall with the Royal Philarmonic Orchestra, one of the first ever combinations of rock band and classical music.

I'm not half as aggressive as you think ;) Just express myself rough.
I've got to say I had my guns pointed at Nostradamus and ready to shoot, especially after the VH1 and Mtv listens but I am completely taken aback with the work done with the synths which I usually despise. I have no problem with the drum work. Ballads are dependent upon mood and the guitar work is not what I wished for, though it is still great and done extremely well. Some more spontaneity (sp?) would be more to my taste in a few places. Deep Purple I think can't so much be judged with today's standards. They were THE band at their time. I love their studio stuff. Between Sabbath and Purple, Purple are my favorite. I don't think they've ever stopped touring and they pre-date Sabbath.
It is because I like good metal that I like this album. [Show/Hide Quoted Message](Quoting Message by The original Metallian from Friday, July 04, 2008 4:44:27 PM)

Yes, I hate the album but I can listen to 7 songs out of 23 (if we consider the intros). I set my expectations really high when it comes to Priest. No one can do what they do, not even close, so 7 songs out of 23 could be OK for a band that I don't expect much from, like - I don't know - Van Halen. From Priest I expect a lot more than that. And I can "listen" to 7, but so far I enjoy 2 or 3. It all depends on who is releasing the album. That's why I hated Metallica's black album and everything after it. The black album would have been great for an average band, but for Metallica, after showing what they could do in Master and Justice, it was crap.
This is way more than "a ballad here and there" (I like Priest's ballads) - there are songs that don't even have guitars!! (if they do, they sound like synths).
I almost exclusively listen to my CDs in the car - the sound is awesome, I am alone in an enclosed room...this was no exception, but instead of enjoying it I found myself yelling "WHAT THE F**K IS THIS?!?!?" (literally).
I love German metal and Diamond, but I didn't feel any of that here. Sorry.
You seem to like a lot of good metal (mentioning German metal and Diamond) so I really can't understand how you liek this album. But - there is something for everyone in this world, I guess. Again - there were quite a few Priest fans who loved Two and I was banging my head against the wall...
To kit kat:
Very good point! I didn't think of "that" Priest. Songs like the ones you mentioned (Epitaph, Dreamer deceiver, Run of the mill) are by far my least favorites. When I think Priest I think mostly of Stained Class / Hell Bent for Leather and newer. From the first 3 albums I can listen to some songs and I skip the other ones. I guess those are the ones that several people like the most? But in my mind those songs are "to be forgiven" considering the age - new rock band, trying to make their way, find their style, not a lot of music around. Deep Purple's first 3 CDs were also crappy and then they released a masterpiece like In Rock, maybe the heaviest album of its time. So - when certain bands were (in my mind) clueless trying to find their style in the late 60s, early 70s I sort of don't hate their music, I just consider it part of taking your first steps. But Nostradamus is being released quite a few years and albums after that...

I don't understand you. First you say you hate the album, that it is not Priest. Now you "can" listen to a few songs of it....? Judas Priest has always done a ballad here and there, some dubiously metal songs here and there. To me this is Priest like it hasn't been for a long time. I'm not a fan of metal ballads for the most part, they're so easy to detest. I rather have a total massacre for two hours. But since this wasn't meant to be a massacre, I take what I can get out of it which is plenty. Computer speakers don't do justice to the sound. If you got a good sound system in your car, if you have a car, then listen to it going down the highway. My first listen of Nostradamus was like that and the sunset at the time only helped the mood. If the second cd seems like Nostradamus loses some steam, I think it provides a little break from the massacre of the 1st cd. Me, I rather have the spastic guitars, which there is not enough of. I can feel Ian Hill's bass rather well and unlike the first listen online, I think Halford's voice is in good shape, he does a great job. I love the italian opera and the french distorted vocals. There is an overall feeling of german metalness...even somewhat king diamondish. Definitely Black Sabbath. I like how the violin was applied for drama. Metalmaz, I am totally with you. Other users sort of justify Nostradamus on the basis that Judas needs to change and evolve. These are 2 different things. Like it was said, every single Priest album has been different form the previous one (some more than others - eg: Defenders is not very much different from Screaming, Turbo was a lot different from Defenders, etc) but it all seemed to be part of the evolution and, why not, time passing by. If a band would release today an album like British Steel, it would be out of place. Metal (traditional metal) has changed. Sounds changed. But the band is, with better or worse results, following a path, with ups and downs. But a coherent path.
The only songs that I can listen to from this album are Prophecy, Pestilence, Death, Conquest, Persecution, Nostradamus and Future of mankind. Are they all similar? No. Nostradamus definitely sounds like Painkiller (I ain't complaning!), but Death sounds very different, almost like Black Sabbath. BUT IT IS STILL METAL. Now, songs like Alone, to name one of the many, what genre are they?? Metal?? No. They are - yes, crap.
I guess this dissapointment is only comparable to the one I felt when Metallica released the black album. Atrocious. But I never thought Priest would do something like this.
And I can't understand a real Priest fan enjoying this release. I shouldn't be surprised, since there were also Priest fans that liked Two, and I didn't. But I didn't hate it either, because it wasn't Priest, it was Priest's singer exploring new ways. Not the same case here.

he needs money for a Rush tattoo on his ass. [Show/Hide Quoted Message](Quoting Message by Skinwalker from Thursday, July 03, 2008 12:28:23 PM)

"Why did they do this?"
Hell if I know.
I understand unhappy fans who vent. Especially in the heat.
You are not an unhappy fan. You're just another dude with enough money in his hands to splurge on tattoos but bitching at how much it cost to buy a cd of his favorite band and so he goes on a tirade of how bad the music is and wondering if he can recoup some of the money spent buying Nostradamus because he doesn't think it's Judas Priest. Though he lurves Turbo and thinks Maiden's Matter of Life and Death is "the best since 1988."
You wouldn't know great metal if it hit you over the head in the shape of a lead sinker.
I haven't posted anything anywhere in so many years...the last time was when Halford was roaming around with Two and I used to post on the Two boards under my nickname "metallian" (hence my new name here).
What drove me to post again after so many years is the need to vent after listening to Nostradamus.
What the f**k where they thinking??? I have SO many feelings about this album, none of them are positive: anger, frustration, dissapointment. I HATE Nostradamus with all my guts. I think it is an insult to the fans. I am 38 years old, I have been listening to metal since I was 8. I have Judas' cross tattooed on my right arm, so I am not exactly a casual fan. I am no "head banger-or-die" either - I love Dream Theater, Queensryche, Maiden and I also like Queen, Pink Floyd, old school jazz (Charlie Parker, Marsalis, Satchmo, West Montgomery, etc). So, all labels apart for us who dislike the album, I think it is horrible. When I want Priest, I want Priest. This is not Priest. I love Painkiller, but I also like Turbo or Point of Entry. Every single previous album was Priest. This is crap.
I have burned myself a Nostradamus compilation with the stuff that I like and I came up with an 8 song, 47 minutes album. I will sell the CD as soon as I can, in order to recoup something out of it (in a couple of months the word will be out and the CD will cost $ 0.99). This will be the first time I don't own a Priest album (I even have bootlegs)
I just don't understand! You don't need to completely change your style and thow your escence away in order to make a conceptual album. What's more, I don't recall any band doing that (Queensryche's OM, Dream Theater's Metropolis 2, Gamma Ray's Land of the Free - they all stuck to their guns). Sme bands some have even released the best albums in their careers when they went for the conceptual. It is not that Judas' members are old either. Maiden's Matter of Life and death (another conceptual, BTW) was their best album since 1988. Megadeth's last 2 are their best since Countdown to extinction.
WHY DID THEY DO THIS?!?!?!?!?!

IMO, Nostradamus is certainly a welcome addition to Judas Priest's long legacy even though it's going to take a while for some people to get used to it.
[metalmaz] Thursday, July 03, 2008 2:23:12 PM
Very true and I don't expect them to turn out the same old thing ago al la AC/DC (much as I like Acca!)
Look how much Rush changed their musical style. It took time, but I like what they did in the 80's and onwards.
But I am finding Nostra very hard going.

Metallian.
On the whole I agree. I don't exactly hate Nostradamus; there are a handfull of good songs, but I have to say that I'm very let down by it. There's no edge, it's samey, it's far too long. I 'm sure that Scott isn't playing on it, they've used a drum machine
I'm all for groups progressing. I certainly don't expect them to stick to the same format as British Steel. I really like Angel Of Retribution and even Lochness has grown on me.
As you say Iron Maiden's BMW and AMOLAD are amongst their best. I also love United Abominations and The System Has Failed. I think the same about Saxon - Lionheart and The Inner Sanctum is probably their best music to date. Thye've all progressed, but haven't lost their identity like Priest have with this release.
You will get a bollocking for your post - people have been flamed by some (not all) members of this forum for being so wicked and disloyal for daring to post negative comments. [Show/Hide Quoted Message](Quoting Message by The original Metallian from Thursday, July 03, 2008 12:30:41 AM)

I think this album is so-so. Lots of boring slow songs, which make me lose attention fast, but at the same time lots of great songs. The great songs are some of the greatest pieces of perfection JP ever made. I think they should have made a smaller album only which the good songs, that would have been better. But overall, good album.
But I agree with what bullet said: if there's one thing I absolutely love in priest is that, each album, they are a totally different band. And they are still good. They change style, without changing the quality. They don't try to live in the past, they surprise us with every new album.
If you like the new style or don't, it's a matter of personal taste. But fear not, next album they'll come with a totally different thing, that you may or may not like.

I never said they've "lost their way." I don't expect them to stay the same. Maiden are making the best music ever 25 years on. So are Megadeth and Saxon. But just becaue I don't stick my nose up Priest's arse and say all their releases are the best music ever , doesn't mean I don't love them. And I say the same about many other bands I love such as Maiden, Saxon, Rush etc. They've all released sub standard albums. And the ones I may think as sub standard, other people like. I respect their beliefs, even if I don't agree with them
What I was trying to highlight is the idiots who tore into the fans who made negative remarks about Nostradamus. I was talking about them and not Priest fans. But you're not intelligent enought to work that out .
The point about Mugabe (tongue in cheek) was a reaction to the venom of some of the people who really laid into them.
However if you think that that Mugabe quip makes me worse than Hitler, you can't think Hitler is that bad? Have you actually met any Jews or seen some of the programmes about the death camps. Were you dropped on your head as a baby?
I agree. I dont like Rocka rolla. lots of fans dont like turbo, but to me, the fact that they branch out, grow and evolve is why I like them the most.

I have enjoyed every Priest album. Never once disliked a song. Nostradamus in my eyes is a masterpiece. It is epic as hell. I am glad that the Priest took it to a whole new level. Taking it to an "opratic" approach. Priest has always took metal in a new direction but in a good way. Good stuff!

I've heard people say it's too long, that it's boring, that the production and sound are sub par. All of these things are valid for a band whose objective was to sell as many albums as possible. I'm guessing that all of the objections raised on this board and others were raised inside Epic records before release. It looks like the band got their way this time because of their success in the past.
So we have Nostradamus, a bold new direction for the band. Like always, some fans will hate it and some will love it. The ones who love it will defend it like it was one of their children. I personally love the album and admire the band for taking a risk where they could have easily churned out another Painkiller or Angel and cashed cheques. For those that don't like the album, fine, listen to British Steel and lament about how JP has lost its way. Better yet, go out and buy the album of more "reliable" artists, like ACDC, Def Leppard and Aerosmith. Just don't think that you are the only person that really knows about the quality of the album. Mugabe supporters? Anybody that says that about Judas Priest supporters is worse than Hitler.

I just finished listening to Nostradamus the first time. I am completely stunned. This is certainly unlike anything Priest has done before. Its quite cerebal in some places, a far cry from the hard drivin', in your face heavey metal we're used to hearing. Having said that, I think that it is a very interesting album. Rock opera? Rock Symphony? Heavy metal? It sort of defies catoragization. Although its slow and plodding in some parts, I think that this is a excellent concept and a truly amazing effort by the band.

Yeah, that whole "your not a fan" stuff is bullshit. In all honesty, I didn't think I was going to like it and I ended up diggin' it big time. There are a couple of tracks that I could do without, but all in all I like it. That does NOT mean that I'm any bigger or better a fan than anyone else. If I didn't like it, I'd be saying that. Immaturity is exactly what it is. Many of the people who talk so tough were not even born when I started listening to Priest. I will never officially "ignore" anyone, as I don't believe in doing so, but I won't put much stock in their opinions. Ass kissing is not an admirable trait in anyone. I'd much prefer to hear an opinion that disagrees with mine rather than one that is just what I want to hear.

Could"nt" of put it in text any better! Ithink alot of people coming to the site are afraid to give honest opinion ,so they keep to themselves. How can you come to this site if you are a true priest fan and say this album kicks ass! About 4 tracks catch me, but not in a metal way !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well I've listened to Nostradamus a lot and I'm afraid just can't get into it at all.
I had doubts when I heard it was going to be a concept album after that debacle of Lochness and sad to say my full fears have been realised
Firstly it's FAR TOO LONG. It's in need of serious editing. On the whole it's a mistake to let musicians produce their albums. The Jimny Pages of the world can get away with it, but most groups can't.. Possibly it's an ego thing- band members insisting that their particular song should be included. This album needed a producer (such as Tom) who could rack the whip and chuck out the songs that frankly just don't hack it.
It's samey. Most of the time, I'm hard pushed telling one song from another. It's almost like listening to a metal Andrew Lllyod Webber.
Glen And KK are in excellent form and Halford is vocally stronger than on Angel Of Retribution. But Hill may have well not have been there. He's been mixed so far down he may has well not have bothered playing. And what the hell have they done with the brilliant Travis. From the sounds of it, they've used a fucking drum machine.
There are a few very good songs on Nostradamus. But I have to say I'm let down. After hearing this, I just stick on Stained Class, Painkiller, Screaming For Vengeance , Sad Wings, British Steel etc. That's what Priest are about.
It also seems that people who are negative are getting a bashing for daring to have an opinion. I guess they're Mugabe supporters. Edited at: Sunday, June 29, 2008 2:23:25 PM Edited at: Sunday, June 29, 2008 2:25:01 PM Edited at: Sunday, June 29, 2008 2:26:15 PM

I would like to say that as a 40 year old, old school metal is my thing, and Judas Priest is right up there with Maiden, Metallica, KISS, and Megadeth in my book. I happen to LOVE this new record, even if it is a departure from what we have enjoyed from JP since 1974. Also, the artwork is killer!! I think a tattoo is in order for this one! Nostradamus is a brave and welcome move for a band who made their name doing just that; being brave.
When I first heard JP it was Sad Wings. What appealed then was the sense of musical adventure/drama mixed with ear-drill riffing, and the fact that they pushed the envelope further than Sabbath or anything I’d heard before.
With Nostradamus they’ve re-invented themselves again and the entire feel of the CD sits beautifully alongside their earlier stuff. In the forthcoming tour (got my ticket – the waiting begins!) I hope we hear of both ends of their amazing catalogue.

I would have to agree with the scaled down track list. The stuff in between some tracks is what has most fans in limbo about their true feelings on this CD. THE ANSWER - for all those still scratching their heads over the latest offering from JP is, I think, perhaps one caused by the of pacing on the album.
It is, after all, very very long, with some considerable mid-paced / ballad-y numbers. My advice is to edit it down to a slimmer, meaner & faster 80mins (single disc) version.
Select the following running order on to a CDR, or ipod playlist etc, and hear a much more familiar, agressive & traditional metal-esq sounding release.
1. Dawn of creation
2. Prophecy
3. Awakening
4. Revelations
5. Sands of Time
6. Pestilence & plague
7. Death
8. Peace
9. Conquest
10. Persecution
11. Alone
12. Shadows in the flame
13. Visions
14. Calm before the storm
15. Nostradamus
16. Future of mankind
Now, I know there will be many out there screaming (for vengeance) that this is sacriledge & not how the album is intended to be listened to, but, then they are already the converted, and what we are trying to do here is get as many people on board as possible. I myself, do find the whole double disc a rather flabby affair, I'm sorry to say, and do actually prefer the above edited version which I find is a far pacier & exciting listen - much more what I was hoping for.
I see it as something similar to the cinema release versions of the Lord Of The Rings films, as opposed to their much weightier Director's cut DVDs.
As for the missing tracks, well once you've grown to love the above you can re-incert them later, or visit them individually & see how they shape up having acclimatized yourself to this new world of the metal gods.
Just trying to help.

As I said before ,I am playing the cd as I type this. I think that the one thing that everyone may not be taking into mind is how old these guys are.I have too been a fan since I was a kid,and thanx to them i got into music(as in learning to play as a drummer, singer, writer, composer) i've been at it for 20 yrs now and its hard to do the stuff i did 20 yrs ago when i was younger and more fit.and harder to keep it fresh. rememer metal music is the bastard son of classical music, in the way it is structured, its composition, its feel and mood. it picks you up and drops you.music with real emotion does this.to a point you have to look at the bands problem,on one hand if they put out painkiller #2 than people will say its rehash, bein there done that.On the other hand if its a different thing than people say its no good, So they are damned if they do & damned if they dont. as i still am listening to the disk i think the fact that Halford is singing. and in italian in basic operatic form is majestic.Again I hope I could be so fortunate to sound and sing half that good at there age. LONG LIVE THE PREIST

Whether you like this album or not I think we should stop and think about JP for a moment. I personally think the album taken in it's context of what the boys have attempted to do is brilliantly done, combining all the facets of JP music over the years.
The boys have done a musical piece maybe more so for themselves and their own personal satisfaction rather than creating something for us fans and for a band of their enduring career I think they are entitled too.
They say themselves in the opening blurb how their metal history and Nostradamus share "overcomin difficulties, standing up against those who misunderstand what we believe in and many other virtures that attest to what we do with our music". This kinda says it all and is akin to why they have chosen this man's story to tell.
Judas Priest are a group of intelligent and highly moralled bunch of guys and to think they are still creating and pumping out such powerful and unrestrained music with clarity is a credit to them.
There will never be another band like Judas Priest and so I for one are thankful for any music they give us and am also thankful for them touring again.
I thoroughly enjoy listening to NOstradamus.
[doodah] Thursday, June 26, 2008 4:51:50 AM
No doubt this is a record which has caused a lot of debate. Those wanting a painkilling priest or a freewheel burning priest and nothing else are sure to be disappointed. To me it's a masterpiece that i knew i would love the first time it was put on; it's such an atmospheric record which flows from start to end. While rob doesn't hit the higher end of his ability to often he surely demonstrates what a brilliant vocalist he is. At 23 songs and 2 CD's it's quite a collection, and most bands would put the rubbish on the second CD. Most band however wouldn't attempt such a record and Judas Priest once again prove they are masters of what they do.
At the moment the 2nd CD gets played more than the 1st......

Dead, I appreciate the fact you're pissed off about Necro leaving. But I for one had enough of his constant bitching and griping about the new CD. I respect the fact that he didn't like it, but like others here, I REFUSE to keep having to hear him bash Priest for the disc. Get over it already! Tons of people love or at least like, the Nostradamus CD. Hell, it even debuted in the Billboard Top 10 here in the US! I'm betting it'll had a similar debut in the UK and elsewhere.

Judas Priest: Nostradamus
This is a very interesting album and the concept is perfection. Nostradamus' pain and suffering were not in vain, he was a great man and will live on forever. The loss of his child and wife are permanently etched in the minds of millions and his purpose not forgotten. The warning he posted to humanity was clear and brilliant, a message to the future for the salvation of humanity. His writings include many such intellectually brilliant pieces such as the decryption of the "Code of the Bible" where he wrote of one significant number that explains the true meaning of the book, and what it means to society. The war he predicted is occurring at this time, freedom is at hand from the scurge of the selfish ones. the millions are rejoicing from his single act of sacrifice, his wonderful spirit, and the unconceraable love he expressed for his family and humanity. An unshakable faith that he will be repaid for, even though when making the ultimate sacrifice, he was not aware he would be saved from the abyss of darkness. The fear is gone and dread erased, the war machine passed from haters to the lovers of life.
Congradulations to Judas Priest for this revelation, a piece that will be celebrated for some time to come, an amazing album. I was so stunned to see it, now I must go to the concert.
I appreciate all of the hard work that went into its creation, and look forward to the completion of Nostradomus.
Thank You,
Christopher

Tony,
As a long time Judas Priest fan I must say that I agree with you. There is no shame in admitting that you don't like an album and just because you don't like an album or two, doesn't mean that your not a fan of the band. There is only one other Judas Priest album that turned me off as much as this album and that was Turbo. I've never been a fan of that type of guitar sound and I'm still not. I like raw power, I'm not looking for another painkiller, etc. but I think that Judas Priest should stay with what they know best. Oh yea it's always good to expand your horizons, but without the sound that they produced on Nostradamus. Well, I'll wait for the next album! Priest however, will always remain my favorite no matter what they put out.

You expressed your opinion in a very thoughtful and admirable way, Tony. I must say that I appreciate your comments. Moreover, I appreciate the way in which you presented them. Well done. [Show/Hide Quoted Message](Quoting Message by mother popcorn from Tuesday, June 24, 2008 1:26:45 PM)

We're talking about KK Downing and Glenn Tipton here... Where are the guitars? Where's the edge? As soon as I opened the booklet and saw "guitar synths" my heart sank... All I'm hearing is watered down guitar tones...buried in the mix...
A double CD, and all they can muster is a few tracks with any teeth whatsoever...
I give them high marks for trying to create something that is as ambitious as this, and far different than anything they've ever done...but the bottom line for me is this. This is not what I want to hear from Judas Priest...
First and foremost, I have to be honest with myself... In doing so, I have to admit that I'm as disappointed with this release as I could possibly be. I'm sorry I feel this way, but saying anything else would be less than truthful...
Guitar synths, plodding slow-tempo songs throughout both discs, and an overabundance of atmospheric keyboards... Sorry fellas...but Nostradamus is DOA...
I'm sure I'll receive more than a fair share of criticism, but know that I've simply expressed my true feelings...

So far I'm delighted with "Nostradamus". Priest have always had a lot of variety on their albums, but this is their most diverse so far. The only song I haven't taken to yet is "Exiled"...

The CD is just fine. Everyone should just loosen up a bit and really take in everything you hear. This could possibly be the CD of the year.

It would be cool beyond words to see them play the entire Nostradamus album live with a full orchestra backing them up.
