I too agree with DF.  I drifted after Painkiller.  Though I liked it, I was going in a little different direction at the time and drifted musically.  I didn't pick up the Ripper era cds because I liked Rob's voice.  Does that make me a bad fan?  It's hardly fair to the other 4 who continued on.  There was just a little something tasty missing in the musical mix for me, and I guess that was Rob's contribution.  Since AOR, I have listened to some of Jugulator and Demolition, and really like Hell is Home, and Cathedral Spires, but to date, still haven't picked up either cd.  Which would you recommend?  I'm working my way through the Re-masters and am getting a kick out of some of the additional songs!  It's like getting something old, but it's new to me.  My number one pick for which album to buy, is Defenders of the Faith, and 2nd, Sad Wings of Destiny.  Love'em both!

I agree with Freeze here,I do however like some of the Jugulator album but it still didn't have the right sound to me as a fan,the lyrics were very simple and un-halford/Priest like Glenn did his best I'm sure, but something just didn't seem right, and funny enough saying all that I still do like Jugulator,I don't like the Death Row song or the Burn In Hell song, the other 8 tracks I can deal with but the album is still not really a quality album.Cathedral Spires is absolutely excellent though,Glenn's lyrics for this track were top notch supurb and that track is a classic Priest track, but the rest is somehow forgettable.

Demolition is Priest's second worse album with Turbo being thier worst in my opinion.I hate Demolition,13 tracks and only 3 of them are listenable...yuk!

Ah. Very well said. I can certainly understand that. It appears that we are distinctly different in that area, which is just fine.  For me, the very essence of a Priest song is the melodic value each one brings. The vocal melodies are equally well done and that adds to what has always been Priest's great attraction for me. The melody within the driving, pounding Metal vibe. With the "Ripper" songs, it seems to me that much of the melodic value was lost in favor of a more "contemporary" sound. As you said, Priest evolved with what was popular at the time, just as they did with Turbo. The difference being Rob, of course. He always injected that melodic sense to the songs and gave Priest a very distinct sound.

In all honesty, I was not really following Priest at the time anyway. The last album I had purchased was Painkiller which, for me, signaled a "re-birth" for Priest and a return to a more "classic sound" after all the mid-eighties stuff. When Rob left the band, I was pretty much onto other things and paid little attention until just prior to his return. When I heard the Ripper stuff, I was covinced I would not follow them ever again and then, Rob returned. AoR really sealed it for me. I love that album.

Thats a fair comment, as it is probably just that which attracts me to these albums- I grew up right in the middle of nu-metal and hardcore, and although it is desperately uncool these days to admit that you ever liked any of it (most of my peers would much rather pretend they were listening to Black Sabbath and Van Halen in the late 90s/early 00s) but it was a more fertile time for metal than people claim- the genre moved forwards a lot and Priest were right in the thick of it without selling out- it is very distinctively them and they took the brutuality of Painkiller and put in a new dimension with some creepy keys and synths work. The lyrics are perhaps not up to their 80s standards- I guess that's another opinion thing.

Oh dear! I just could not disagree with you more. I mean, I am not "anti-Ripper" but those albums simply are NOT Priest, for me. The music style is just nothing like "classic" Priest. Far too "hardcore" for me. More like a Nu-Metal sound than a classic Heavy Metal. Of course, its all opinion and we all have our own. I just do not care for Jugulator, Demolition, etc.

I agree- and it was much better than Crack the Skye. Although I'll be frank, I went off Mastodon after their thoroughly mediocre performance supporting Slayer in October 08.

As to Priest albums, I think that Point of Entry and Ram It Down are 'completist only' albums (but feel free to disagree) but generally most of their albums are worth it, and don't neglect the Ripper era- Demolition is very, very good.

Actually, I'd recommend Screaming For Vengeance if you haven't got it already - such scope and variety: The Hellion - The single greatest opening track of all time - just listen to the guitars crash in in the very first bar! Electric Eye - what Priest fan doesn't know and love that song??? Riding On The Wind - three and a half-odd minutes of savage joy! Bloodstone - Priest's 'funkiest' track to date - that one's got a sound all of it's own... Take These Chains - far from the best one on the album in my opinion, but still superb musically and great for when you're not really concentrating and want to hear some sweeeeet guitar licks. Plus, that opening is gorgeous. Pain and Pleasure - okay, I'll admit I think that one's a dud. But then we have: SCREAMING FOR VENGEANCE - savage, powerful, and as heavy and furious an output as Priest have ever done really - just feel the pure rage bursting through and REVEL in it baby... You've Got Another Thing Comin' - everyone knows this - hell, they even put it on one of the GTA games! Fever - totally out of the blue, like Bloodstone it has a sound all of it's own. And check out Rob's vocals in the bridge section, "So destiny has brought us... it feels so right." Amazing. Devil's Child - if you can listen to this without banging your head, then either you're not a Priest fan, or otherwise I wish you all the best in recovering from Swine Flu. And if you get the Remastered version, 'Prisoner Of Your Eyes' tops them all - but then coming from someone who took his screen name from the song, I guess my views could be a little biased...

Good choice Hellrider My advice to Shipin is Angel Of Retribution if you want the all-around Judas Priest album. Otherwise if you want Priest to the max, then Painkiller
