Yes, I know what you mean & I agree. I was disappointed to hear Rob struggling with that high-pitched intro, and everytime he attempted it I was wishing him to nail it, but sadly on every occasion it seemed to be beyond him.
It's a pity that the band never played Blood Red Skies on the actual Ram It Down tour, as then we'd be able to compare his ability on it (who knows maybe he'd have struggled on it live even then, although I doubt it).
I'm just glad that he's found a decent compromise, that to my ears at least, has added rather than detracted from the song.
Now, if he was failing to reach some of the high-pitched screaming on Victim Of Changes etc, then there might be proper reason to worry, but from what I've seen, heard & witnessed personally the Metal God's voice is still in pretty good shape.

I will admit that "squawking" can be a little nerv-racking at times. When you think Priest though, the first thing that enters your mind is Rob halford screams.

I think it's a bit unrealistic to expect Rob to be able to sing exactly how he used to be able to in the 70's, 80's & early 90's. However, he does have a right good stab at it & some of his vocal performances on this Epitaph tour have been breathtaking - just check out "Victim Of Changes" for some excellent screaming. Even this clip of "Blood Red Skies" has him going for it too.
The falsetto part of the intro though, does seem to be beyond him now, and would probably give most vocalists a serious challange (in a live setting especially).
Personally, I would rather see or hear him save his fantastic voice for those notes he can reach, and where the song really needs it.
From what I can see, nothing is lost from him singing in a lower key, and it saves everyone cringing as he struggles to reach the unattainable.
It's always nice to see common sense prevail.

Doesn't this ruin the whole Judas Priest effect though, Halfords high notes are 50% to 70% of the expierence. |

OK guys my comment about WhiteSnake/Judas Priest gig in Costa Rica is .... Really amazing after listening some classic of hard rock as WhiteSnake I could not believe it , an incredible sound , and for the very first time watching them and I almost cry that night , for Whitesnake fans we are happy very very happy .
and then Judas Priest presentation at 9:35pm the entire stage were dark totally .. some segs after it blows and everyone there shows emoion of that moment , for my I was like an then an then for two hours and a half.....
All the classics were played but for my opinion I could stay more than two hours jejeje , really many many songs that I would like to listen.. but is ok really all the time there was great , they sound like the 80´s concerts or even better , a Show like any other two bands that I like to listen , those that went to the concert knows what I say ... really first time for both bands in Costa rica and first time watching them ..... incredible show .....thanks for an amazing show
Long Live Heavy Metal!!!!!!!!

Well, I kinda agree that this version is slightly better quality & a more faithful reproduction of the 1988 album version, but I have to conclude that I still prefer these newer versions from the South American tour. They sound much fresher, especially the Costa Rica one where Rob seems to be giving his vocal delivery a custom job. If it were still 1988 & Rob's voice was still as it was then, I'd be happy to hear a falsetto intro & album version accurate rendition, but it was 23 years ago, and thankfully Rob is wise enough to know that dropping down a key or so has revamped the song.
I'm glad JP are stopping world tours if it means lengthening the bands life-span. As Rob also says on the Costa Rica press conference, he has no thoughts about retiring what-so-ever.
Amen to that!

In Costa Rica they filled the place and the people watching appreciate Judas for the great band that they are. Last night I watched some real old Priest on youtube and a real young Halford singing, but that was then, and this is now. He has a much more mature way of singing today and Glenn Tipton still plays that guitar in the way that he does, and Ian still plays the bass and Richie is the new guy to listen to.
The public in the US are strapped for cash right now. That's as simple as that.
If the ticket sales were great, then Judas Priest wouldn't be disappointing, then?

(Starbreaker has been awful) Nothing. I will be there saying good bye one last time. Time to fade into the sunset for JP. Sad to see them like this at the end of their career and dropping down so many notches on the live show. Disappointed in the way this tour is turning out and the US tix sales have been poor too. Not meaning to slag them and I know they are up their in their age, but..its close to emarassing to watch for this die hard fan.

I totally agree, definitely far much better that what he's been doing. He could try doing this during other songs because he really needs it. Obviously we fans would love to have him screeeaaaaming but it sounds great even when he is not doing so.

And sounding better for it I think.
Saw them live a few times in the UK & also seen plenty of YouTube clips with him squawking his way painfully trying to recreate the intro of the album version, so am quite relieved to see him try it normally.
See what you think - apologies for the sound quality.
