I think Popevil SUCKS. I know that you, Deep Freeze and many others paid for three shows, and ect...but I would never sit through a Popevil show,no way.
And Popevil is not capable of putting out a CD that will "rock us out" any time soon. They play alternative top 40 whatever the radio wants music.
I'm glad you've enjoyed them though...I'm not taking that away from you,or not trying to upset you in any way...but I just can't take Popevil at all.
Remember...you are on a traditional heavy metal forum with 90% metal fans here so this should'nt be a suprise at all to read. Good for you though man.
Okay! Popevil did rock out at our concert! They got the PARTY started for us down here in Corpus Christi, Texas! However, I knew nothing about them at the time, so I you-tubed them, the music is okay! But not my flavor for some reason! But I will defend them with this, ........THEY KICK ASS LIVE! They really sounded great! Kudos to POPEVIL! Hey, ...they have at least made it big time touring with Whitesnake and Judas Priest! So good for them! Keep a rockin'! Maybe they will come out with a new CD and really rock us out!

In the interests of good discussion, I will offer this;
As I had paid for THREE bands, the Prince and I decided to SEE three bands and left early enough to catch Popevil. Now then, while I still agree with most of what has been posted regarding their placement on this bill, I have to say that I actually enjoyed their set. Will I be purchasing a CD anytime soon??..No. Their musical style is clearly NOT my "cup of tea". But they were fairly tight, energetic and above all, very humble. At one point the vocalist conceded that they are "following their dream" and are honored to be a part of this gig. He thanked the " Vegas Heavy Metal crowd" for allowing them to do just that and be a part of the show and I find that to be very refreshing and commendable. These guys know they do not fit on a Metal ticket but they are professionals and did what professionals do, they worked. They gave it their all. Moreover, they are grateful for the opportunity. The guy said as much as he tried to "work the crowd". I felt a certain admiration for him and his band.
We can laugh and make our jokes if that is how we care to represent ourselves in this matter, but I have decided that I hold a certain respect for a band that is facing FAR more adversity than just trying to sell music and make a name with this gig. They have to overcome the mentality WE have regarding their music and whether or not they "belong". Perhaps they do not, but I still have great respect for them as professional musicians.

Yeah, thats probably what happened alright. I,alike you.....would like to see heavy metal bands playing together as a community of "metal" rather than see other bands with other music.
Having Popevil open up for Judas Priest is almost a "set-up-for-failure" for a band like "Popevil" ..but at the same time its not because they are getting band exposure........
They are getting band exposure at the expense of getting booed every night!! lol!!
Well, it would seem that the Band members have very little to say about that part. I would think the "politics" of management and "favors" due would have a lot to do with it. I mean, people in the music industry "call in" favors or ask other managers to give a shot to this band or that band and the BEST way to get exposure is to hook up with a well-known act. All conjecture, of course, but I should think it was clearly NOT Rob's idea or anyone within Priest. Someone "higher up" probably owed a favor....
J.D. DIAMOND wrote:
Yeah your probably right Freeze.....but I wish Rob and management were to skip bands like "Popevil" and give the big chance to some other young upcoming "METAL" band.
Maybe Rob dosn't have control over that, but whoever does should give the heavy metal bands a chance to open up for Priest instead of a pop rock band like Whitesnake
and a alternitave tunnel hat band like "Popevil". LOL! But yes....I wish the opening bands were all heavy metal bands. Black metal shows have "black metal bands" or at
least "real" death metal bands.....or black thrash bands ..ect..they all are "metal" and look "metal"........so why can't the heavy metal scene cater to heavy metal bands?

I do recall in interview recently with Rob where he said that opening acts are part of Priest's way of helping out newer acts...He said it is "part of what we do" and that all major acts should give back in this way. Well, dont get me wrong, I think he is still a good singer, he just doesnt have the same voice anymore... I mean, if you listen to his stuff with Deep Purple and the classic Whitesnake, he had a really good voice. Very deep and smooth. Now its sort of squeaky.
As for what Rob said, Whitesnake are hardly a new act, and they would help Popevil a lot more if they sent them down to the job centre. [Show/Hide Quoted Message](Quoting Message by Deep Freeze from Saturday, August 08, 2009 2:10:59 PM)

Seems funny to me that at a Michigan venue, their supposed "home state," there was hardly a SOUL in their seat when they should have been playing. Went to the San Antonio show and walked around and checked out all of the Spurs stuff when Popevil was on stage. Then when Whitesnake came on we went in and watched them. Yeah they might not be heavy metal but Doug Aldrich and Reb Beech were f...ing awesome! Two great guitarist. Bad Boys, Crying In The Rain and of course In The Still Of The Night were the highlights of their set and of course I must mention the dueling guitar solos. All in all I thought Whitesnake was pretty damn good. You are not going to find many bands that can back up Priest. It's impossible. The Priest is the Priest!!
[spapad] Friday, August 07, 2009 7:58:56 PM
It was disappointing! Especially since I took pics of Whitesnake and didn't really want to be bothered with a camera when Priest hit the stage! I just wanted to be there and present and not be staring at a screen of something I just wanted to WATCH!!
But yeh, I would have liked better bands backing them up. Would have loved to see Disturbed as their only opening act, that would have been a kick ass show, that I would have been there for all the time! *Entering the thread holding up a shield*
Uh, Hi!!...I saw Popevil while waiting for the Priest in Concord. I have to say that they're not that bad...they're pretty energetic, to say the least. The guitarist did a pretty decent guitar solo mid-way through their set. Unfortunately, the fact that their music isn't even close to that of Whitesnake, much less Judas Priest, makes them seem a bit out of place, especially since they weren't wearing much Heavy Metal attire. I think someone else said this already, but Popevil would be better off opening for modern, younger ROCK bands. They have potential to make it big, but next time they should direct their music to a different audience (and maybe get a new booking agent).

Airbourne would have been a great upstart opener....
