Who's Better

I dig Metallica, but you can't compare them to Iron Maiden.
Metallica is faster and more aggressive, but Maiden is more heavy and melodic.

Iron Maiden.

Maiden by a mile.

For me, Metallica are way over-hyped. They did some good stuff, but when you compare their sound to Iron Maiden, or Judas Priest, they don't have the diversity of sounds. It tends towards the monotone side of things for me. Iron Maiden, at their best, rivalled Priest in several ways, especially thematic and lyrical content. I much prefer songs about flying WWII fighter planes than telling people that I am private property.

Still prefer the Priest, but Iron Maiden are superior to Metallica, for sure.

i agree, Priest is still fucking awesome, Iron Maiden had their golden years but now they aren't as great as they used to be, Metallica as well, had their golden years, both are still good, but not the same as they used to be. But i guess i will have to say i would chose metallica over Iron Maiden

Priest rules, Metallica is good but they just cannot compare to Rob and the boys.

Iron Maiden are way better than Metallica!

I pick Maiden a thousand times over Metallica

Yup, neither are as good as they used to be. Maiden never sold out though, Metallica did big time.

I'm sensing a little sarcasm(LOL). Maybe I'm doing it too, I'm not sure. The last thing I want is to get sucked into a back and forth
about Maiden and Metallica. I've already had my problems here and I'm not totally convinced I'm right on this one.
Lastly, screw Metallica and Maiden. They both suck when compared to their early shit. I loved them both at one time. I hate them both now.

I don't think they are making fun of Maiden, I think they were just messing about as you do when your jamming. If anything it shows that they learned to play a maiden song.

You make a good point. I'll have to listen now to see if I get that same vibe. I'm not sure the "Run to the Hills" thing
isn't making fun of Iron Maiden. Did you notice how out of tune it is?

Yes I do, I always carry around a notebook of quotes from Metallica talking about how Maiden influenced them in case a debate such as this arises.

" I really like Iron Maiden" James Hetfield 1986.

My original post on this subject was in reference to Metallica wouldn't exist without Maiden...
That's false. Were Maiden never to exist I guarantee Metallica still would. I'm just curious,
do you have any quotes that you can post from Metallica saying they were influenced by
      Iron Maiden?

I'm not saying Metallica are Maiden clones or anything but there are Maiden influences in their early work. Fade To Black is similar to the sort of thing maiden do, little classical sounding guitar intros leading into songs, Fight Fire, Justice For All, lyrical themes Four Horsemen, Creeping Death, Phantom Lord. That epic sound a lot of early Metallica songs had. They even jammed out the first few bars of Run To The Hills on Garage Days.

Lars and James were massive fans of the NWOBHM and Maiden were one of the bands that spearheaded the movement.

I've heard Metallica say they were influenced by Diamond Head and you can hear it in their music. There
is nothing Maiden like about Metallica.
[jimmyjames] Wednesday, February 10, 2010 5:31:02 AM
Metallica were absolutely influenced by Maiden and many of the other British metal bands of the late 70s and early 80s. They've said so themselves many times.

I wouldn't say Metallica wouldn't exist without Maiden. Metallica is an American metal band, or at least
used to be. I don't think they were influenced by Maiden at all. Maiden was only out a few years when Metallica
started.

I like Metallica more. However to give credit where credit is due, Iron Maiden is great. There would be no Metallica without them. I get it. I am just much more of a Metallica fan.
