People, people, people....
Throughout this whole discussion you keep forgetting something quite vital, and I really can make it without shitty comments as I am not attacking anyone or anything, and I say this before getting down to business so there are no misunderstandings!
Now.
The PRIEST are human beings, not a machine, even if we sometimes like to think of them like that. We all are perfectly entitled to have our opinion and our personal likes and dislikes in a band with such a vast and different discography.
As human beings that they are, they are forced by nature to be curious to try something different. I won't say TURBO was a genuine attempt at it since there was a lot of commercial intention behind it, and I for one don't hold grudges against it. After all, why not? They could afford to, they ventured into that area then came back to their "Home Style".
They are entitled to experiment with new things, and one thing we can be sure of is that NOT one. ONE. Priest album sounds the same as any other by them, they're all unique. Even Defenders is faster and more aggressive and less poppy driven than Screaming was, and those are deemed to be the closest PRIEST albums. This bringsall the way to 2008. After 40 years of history, a break-up and a reunion, I think it only logical that after Angel of Retribution (a very solid heavy metal record and hell of a lot more consistent than Painkiller with great rockers instread of going in all guns blazing) they would think of doing something they'd never done before. It's part of them as a band and it really shouldn't come as that much a surprise that the PRIEST would do something crazy on the next album.
Nostradamus came out a conceptual album. Fair enough, not the best conceptual album ever. Nevertheless it was an evolution in the Judas Priest sound, they experimented with orchestrations and harmonies and a more operatic approach. Let me tell you this: I think we as fans ought to be proud that even 40 years on, they still strive to inovate instead of sticking to the same formulae like many preach they should.
Don't get me wrong here: I don't want them going non-metal or into psychedelic and progressive realms. Nostradamus, for all it's "conceptuality" is still definately a heavy Metal album. Listen to Pestilence & Plague, Persecution, Alone, Visions, Nostradamus and Future of Mankind. You might not LIKE it, and that's fair enough! But it IS Heavy Metal, and while it isn't as traditional as AoR was, it definately isn't soppy Power Metal or Hard Rock.
It is JUDAS PRIEST. Love it or hate it. They have nothing left to prove to anyone.
That said there's a quote I'd like to do:

I couldn't disagree more with those words, and I believe you didn't mean it like it came out.
JUDAS PRIEST cannot be dissociated from Heavy Metal. Not just because they invented it, that would be holding out to former glories. It's because they still are the embodiment of Heavy Metal. They're still playing the shows, playing their classics, and they've still got it in them to keep on going.
If I am wrong,I will admit it and say "I was wrong". But for now...I think that if the band does not deliver a traditional british heavy metal album, then they should wrap it up and call it a day.
J.D., that is being extremist, and I think I've let you know that we aren't that different when it comes to our approach of new things. Nostradamus isn't a straight rocker, it isn't a traditional metal album. That doesn't mean Judas Priest are OVER and done with, quite on the contrary. It proves that there's still some flicker of creativity in them! Nostradamus didn't come out traditional, but if it had other people would have said "Bah, those Judas Priest, always doing the same thing over and over and over"
You can never please everybody. But what you can and they're doing is spread the FAITH in old school Heavy Metal with a set that is 16 songs long not just the 2 Nostradamus ones.
Furthermore, the day PRIEST wraps it up and calls it a day, you'll be taking a large chunk of the breath left in the Heavy Metal movement. The day PRIEST, MAIDEN, HEAVEN & HELL and the other great names in Heavy Metal from the old days "wrap it up and call it a day" will be the first day of the DEATH of Heavy Metal. There is no one to fill in their shoes.
As long as they have the health and the will to do so, I will applaud their perseverance to keep on playing live! Why not even release new albums from day to day? We are not saying that our opinions are the only right opinions, but one thing is for sure.....Nostradamus as a whole,in it's entirety is definately NOT A HEAVY METAL ALBUM.
The only album that is worse than Nostradamus is 1986's Turbo. And that aint saying much!

I am not going to psych myself out for a killer new Priest album and then have the band "pull the rug out from underneath me again"....no way.
