I think one of the differences as far as contact goes between Rugby and the NFL is that each offensive play in the NFL starts from a set position...that means the defense has more time to 'measure' an offensive ball handler up before contact is made...sometimes it's intantanious (contact), but more often than not the defender has the chance at a running start. 'Timing' is an important skill when throwing the ball and the receiver is focused on catching the ball and has little to no time to get into a position to protect themselves against a hit, so the hits are truly more dramatic and painful (even with protective gear).
