Well, despite having bought them for years in microbreweries, I learned a bit of new info on them second to last ski trip in Park City, Utah.

Indeed, it is a 1/2 gallon bottle. Usually brown with a screw-on top. You buy one and you can refill the bottle on the cheap. Many vacuum-seal the cap on with a plastic coating using some form of heat to preserve it longer.

Well, in Park City, the old man sends me out to refill the growler while he sits back watching tv and ordering delivery food. I mention this to the guy at the bar (DAMN cold) and he laughs saying that the word "growler" evolved from fathers sending their sons out to buy them beer. GROWLING at them. LOL!!!

Not sure if this is true or not but the unit and process has been around for centuries.
