Working on getting things worked out so that Mark and I can be there!!   We'll leave the boys here with someone - don't want to take them to Ozzfest, they are way too young! I hope to see Jackylone there too. So Becks, what do you say????

If anyone is wondering, Star Lake is where the Pavillion is located. Technically it's
Burgettstown but the little lake next to it is called Star Lake.

I'm about an hour away. Let's get as many noticeboard members together for Ozzfest !!

Cats/ Phantom/Evita etc are all musicals telling a story. Nostra is an album telling a story as is Tommy by the Who.

HMMMMMMM sounds kind of like something from the n album.what do you think WHAT A FUC?EN NIGHTMARE.
[Nicky007] Tuesday, April 27, 2010 4:18:32 AM
Strictly speaking, Nostra is a concept album and not a rock opera.

In rock operas you have different people singing, or at least the singer uses different styles to set off the different characters.

On Nostra, Rob does all the lead singing and does not do much to differentiate characters - well, after all he mainly sings the Nostradamus character - but changes dramatically between moods.

I can't think of any rock opera that really does it for me (once upon a time I dug JC Superstar).

I can think of a bunch of concept albums that do:  Nostra (of course), The Wall, Scenes From A Memory, V: The New Mythology Suite, Contagion, and I'd say that Jugulator is a concept album too. And there are many more great concept albums.

Nicky.

Yes, my brother was 12 years older than me. He knew I would play it over and over again and it would torture our other brother who was 6 years older than me. Of course, he was in college so it didn't bother him at all! What does a 4 year old know about music anyway? Thankfully, I started listening to METAL when I was 12.

OK, I'll admit that I have also gone to see the ABBA musical, as well as Phantom and many others. Ummm, yeah, I knew every word to every song...... I'll NEVER forgive my oldest brother for getting me hooked on ABBA when I was 4 years old!!! No matter what I do, those lyrics will stay with me until my dying day, AAAAAAAAHHHHH!

Don't laugh (unless it's hysterically) I always loved the musical Cats by Andrew Lloyd (why is there a double ll) Webber. I have always loved cats... I have always had cats as pets... I see myself as a pensioner as the real life version of the crazy cat lady from the Simpsons.... I thought this was normal... then I had writers block and stayed up late and saw this documentary on Discovery where they said that if you have a severe love for cats you might have toxoplasmosis... lol
I look at my kitties in a different light now lol

I've seen The Drunken Chaperone while I was in NYC three years ago. Funny as heck! I've also seen West Side Story (not the movie) and the Lion King. It was strange and awkward seeing the latter at first. And I saw Wicked on a bootleg! HA!!

If you like the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda you might like it.

I saw a news special where they did a behind a scenes segment on it. They show the lead singer (who playes the Wicked Witch) and how she "flies" while singing. It was basically a modified cherry picker draped in black fabric that would pick her up during the climax of the song. It was cool to see.

Nostra is one of the worst Halford fronted Priest albums. Perhaps only Ram It down sucks more. They have (thankfully) failed to proceed with the horrendous idea of playing it all live, despite claiming after it's release they would. It almost 2 years since Nostra, so it doesn't look like that will happen. Instead they went with an album released 30 years ago. Says it all doesn't it. I like Angel Of Retribution (apart form Lochness). Priest should stick to what they play best. Bone crunching metal. Leave the poncey rock opera to Andrew Llyod Webber   [Show/Hide Quoted Message] (Quoting Message by hellrider 31038 from Thursday, April 08, 2010 8:52:50 PM)

Hey, great to see so many Nostra fans

I missed this thread on previous visits to the board.

Yeah, Vegetas, I agree fully with you:  Nostra is one of the great masterpieces of rock !  To my mind, all considered - concept, lyrics, music, musicianship, expression, production & graphics - only comparable to Floyd's The Wall, Dream Theater's Scenes From A Memory, and a few other masterpieces.

You must also be about my age (55), judging from your post.

What's behind your alias, Vegetasrevenge ?  Are you a vegetarian, like me ?

And I liked your wrap-up: "All Hail Judas Priest, seasoned veterans of metal, laying down the law and always breaking it!"

I love the Nostradamus album. It is like a rock opera on par with Superstar. A metal opera, unlike anything unleashed on the public ever before. I hope and pray that they tour with this album, I won't miss it. My first concert was Jesus Christ Superstar, I was about 10 or 11 years old. The operatic format has always struck me as a great way to get a message across.

Hey Spapad and Becks! how are you guys doing...i stop in now and again to read some posts, but don't chit chat like i use too....still playing Nostradamus a time or two a week, still love the record...everyday i get some Priest on, i have been on a 'live' kick lately and have been playing the live albums, and rare recordings i have!  waiting for the deluxe edition of British Steel!!!!! anyways, just wanted to say 'hey'!  take care!
[spapad] Friday, April 09, 2010 4:53:27 PM
This whole Nos thing reminds me of what happened when Point of Entry followed British Steel. Alot of hard core fans hated P.O.E. I didn't dislike the album as a whole, of course there are some songs on that CD that I still hit skip on to this day (we all know the ones!) So you had heavy fans complaining, and people who where more into mainstream music going, hey that's not that bad!  Which to a hardcore fan makes you want to cring when a mainstreamer says that.

Then, Screaming for Vengeance came out and moved the bar up for all bands as to what would pass for true heavy metal. SFV became an 80's gold standard to Heavy Metal.
That said, I do anticipate the next JP new release will once again raise that bar and apply a new standard to the genre of Heavy Metal, and I for one can't wait to hear it! The only time this progression of  music seemed to truely falter in all these years was the release of Turbo followed up by Ram it Down. Ram it Down as not a good LP, it really wasn't! I was very disheartened with that LP.  True it has some good songs on it but it lacks the cohhesive quality that is Judas Priest.
Just my two cents on a long debated issue.

Agree with this HRMG. Hellrider is a true hardcore Priest fan, who just happens to not like Nostradamus. Some of us don't like Turbo, some aren't keen on Point Of Entry, but one thing we all have in common - we love the mighty metal monster that is Judas Priest!!!!

Well, seems I engaged the wrong poster

Thanks for the welcome everyone  - it is all about opinion isn't it? I mean if we didn't have different ones, there would be no point in having a forum.

Judas Priest has gone through so many musical transformations that I am just not sure which the hardcore era is - Is that SFV and Painkiller? British Steel and Hell Bent for Leather? Stained Class ? I like it all, although I rarely turn to Turbo or Ram It Down, but they are all so different. I love good smokin heavy metal, but that comes in many forms.

I second that Spa! Hellrider is a great guy and a huge fan of Priest. He, like a lot of other fans, just don't happen to like Nostradamus. He prefers the hardcore side of Priest. I have to admit, I'm really craving a kick ass METAL MONSTER album from the Priest next time around myself! I want to see them pound Iron Maiden and put that battle to rest FOREVER!! But I do love Nostradamus as well. I really think musically, they outdid themselves on that album. But for some it isn't metal enough. It's all a matter of opinion.

I should not have named Hellrider in my post - my apologies, Hellrider. Obviously we differ on the subtler aspects of what the Priest can and should offer, but nothing that a discussion over a drink or two wouldn't sort out, I am sure.

Judas Priest and soft rock do not roll off the tongue, but when they do take on moodier pieces I think JP have done very well

If I ever get into the realm of frequent posters and onto those other threads, I look forward to talking with Hellrider .

I take it Hellrider is a poster like the one I described. He got on the bus with Painkiller and thinks that is all the band is about. Shame

Painkiller is an outstanding album, especially when you consider how weak, relatively speaking, its predecessor was, but even on Painkiller there are a variety of sounds. Freewheelin Burning is as good an opener on a Priest album that you will ever find, but if the whole album sounded like that, Freewheel Burning wouldn't be nearly as explosive as it is and DOF wouldn't be as great as it is.

Thanks for the piece from Nostradamus, Hellrider, as soon as it ended, I wanted to hear the song that came after it - that's the. sign of a great album. Edited at: Thursday, April 08, 2010 7:08:01 PM

I never even bought it,I bought tickets to see the 2008 show before I heard the album but after hearing it in its entirety,I gave my tickets away to a couple of long time frinds who just knew thier old material, but they enjoyed the show of course but I was to butt hurt over the album to go to the show its just the way I am but I have no doubt that the show was very good.

I haven't seen Judas Priest live since October 1988 Ram It Down tour as they never came to Seattle on the Painkiller tour wich really bummed me out.I wish I could of seen the Retribution 2005 tour but I had to work.

I am glad to those who enjoy Nostradamus,I envy those people because to them, they got an excellent LP from my favorite band of all time.I'm just hoping that this next LP will be the jewel in my territory of heavy metal.

EXTREMELY well-written. Also sums up why I bought the album twice. Super-duper deluxe that I had signed and the deluxe "working version."

Cheers for the welcome. That post has been a long time coming.

I suppose I can see how it polarized the fan base. Nostradamus was a real leap of faith for the band. A faith in each other, their abilities and in the their fan bases ability to go wherever they musically wanted to venture. This will come across as a criticism, and I suppose it is, but I find too often the critics of Nostradamus slag the effort because there are not enough speed metal genre songs on it; in short, it doesn't compare to Painkiller. Painkiller is a great album, but it was one of several musical peaks. SWOD, HBFL, UITE, BS,  SFV, DOTF are others. If the fan of Judas Priest looks across those albums and the ones that I haven't mentioned, there are a ton of musical stylings. Most easily fit the metal mold that JP helped to design, but like Black Sabbath you can't pick one or two songs and say this is what they sound like across the years. They grew and explored. If they hadn't, I don't think I would own every album.

Nostradamus is like a survey of the history of Judas Priest, but done with all new songs. The first side is as close to perfection as I can imagine. The music just rolls from song to song and the intros/outros allow for the shifts in sounds. The second album is a little on the uneven side, but Alone and the title track bring it all home in style. There are a couple of things one has to do if they are going to really give this album a chance and that is 1) listen to it from front to back with no breaks and 2) listen to it a few times. You have to do #1 everytime you listen to it. This is not an album you can put the needle down on track 3 and get any satisfaction. I liked it a lot after my first listen, but I grew to love it by listen 5. The thing that surprised me, as someone nearing my half century on Earth, is that a heavy metal album could continue to impress me as long as this one has. It is my album of choice today, if I am choosing one by Judas Priest.

Thanks again for the welcome

Hiya onetreehill, welcome to the noticeboard! Fascinating first post, I love reading peoples experiences with Priests music, it's wonderful. I'm glad you love Nostradamus so much, it seems to be such a polarising album for many Priest fans - some love it, some hate it. I think your post captures why some people love it very well. Again, welcome to the boards!

Hi all - first time poster

The first time I saw the Priest was in 1978 in a small 3000 seat auditorium in Vancouver. I only owned Stained Class at the time, but after that show, I knew that this was a band that I would follow for as long as they let me. I only say this to give you some background to my relationship with Judas Priest. From Hell Bent For Leather on, I have owned each album on or around the day it was released. Some albums, SFV, DOTF, P have moved me more than others RID, POE, but I have always enjoyed the work and appreciated the band's desire to diversify and to stretch their artistic abilities.

All of that is a peramble to my belief that Nostradamus is Judas Priest's finest hour (and a bit). It embodies a little bit of every thing Judas Priest has ever recorded and it gave them license to try something that has never been attempted in the history of rock - heavy metal or otherwise. I love that every song captures an element of their past. The interludes are clever and, at times, brilliant in their ability to tie all of the music together. For some it may seem overly long, but I believe it flows beautifully and, at time, captures a mood and spirit that is rarely felt from a Judas Priest album. At the end of it all, I feel that I have learned something about Nostradamus the man and this must have been part of the band's goal, but more importantly the album feels like I am listening to the band at the top of their artistic game.

If the band ever stop by to read these notes, I would just say to them congratulations it is an amazing effort. My only regret is that the album wasn't taken on the road and toured as a concept album like this should be. I can only assume the time for that gargantuan tour has past, but wonder if the band has ever considered playing it live once with orchestras, choirs, backing instrumentalists and recording it for posterity. I think many fans would have loved to have seen this show live. If the Priest never record another album, I will feel like Nostradamus is a great crowning achievement to a legendary, hall of fame worthy, career.

Good day all...rumor has been floating around about a Jim 'Nostradamus' Bartek "reunion" tour...lol.  a few friends are asking me to don the outfit and have another 'streak' of listening to the epic album Nostradamus.  Although the album has gotten AT LEAST one play a week since the end back in November, i have agreed to don the outfit again on the second anniversary of the albums release and have a listening party!  Nostradamus lives on! (and yes, i love the record)!
