I remember refusing to watch that documentry because it seemed to be such a has-been-band thing to do, even though I didn't listen to Saxon back then I was disgusted that a legendary British band could be so sell-out!
Thankfully they've really made a comeback since- whether due to said TV programme or not I don't know but I doubt it! |

Well I would definately buy "Lionheart" album and "The Inner Sanctum" album and the re-recorded tracks on the album "Heavy Metal Thunder". Those 3 albums are what you need to buy to have a start on thier collection. Hey british steel.....First don't listen to Necroticist...because Saxon ARE AWSOME!!! .Saxon are a legend from England and started with thier first album self titled "Saxon" from 1979.
The band has 18 studio albums and I would recomend 12 of them!
Yeah the Crusader song is a very great Saxon track...but the album "Crusader" is not that good of an album at all.The opening track "Crusader" is the only killer song on the album from 1984.
So I would stay away from that album....if you want that song ...buy Saxon's "Heavy Metal Thunder" album...an album of old classic Saxon tracks re-recorded in 2003! That is worth buying!
Saxon - 1979
Wheels Of Steel - 1980
Strong Arm Of The Law - 1980
Denim & Leather - 1981
Power & The Glory - 1983
Dogs Of War - 1995
Unleash The Beast - 1997
Metalhead - 1999
Killing Ground - 2001
Lionheart - 2004
The Inner Sanctum - 2007
Into The Labyrinth - 2009
If your a Saxon fan,I would recommend owning these 12 studio records. [Show/Hide Quoted Message] (Quoting Message by british.steel from Wednesday, July 08, 2009 8:00:19 PM)

Yeah I hear ya kiamat,I would stay away from albums: (1984)Crusader (1985)Innocense Is No Excuse (1986)Rock The Nations (1988)DestinyAs I've mentioned below, those are Saxon's worst albums. And 1990 "Solid Ball Of Rock" and 1992 "Forever Free" albums are pretty much like a "Ram It Down" album for both of them, half is cool and half is not.
Saxon - 1979
Wheels Of Steel - 1980
Strong Arm Of The Law - 1980
Denim & Leather - 1981
Power & The Glory - 1983
Dogs Of War - 1995
Unleash The Beast - 1997
Metalhead - 1999
Killing Ground - 2001
Lionheart - 2004
The Inner Sanctum - 2007
Into The Labyrinth - 2009

Yes kiamat. But Saxon has thier share of bad LPs....Out of 18 studio albums...there are 4 albums that are Saxon's worst.........1984 "Crusader" where the only song that is worthy is "Crusader"...the rest just are throw away tracks.
Then ya have 1985 "Innocense Is No Excuse"...terrible! 1986 "Rock The Nations"...yuk! 1988 "Destiny"....yuk! Those 4 albums are terrible Saxon albums.
Then you have 2 albums that are "half" good and half bad just like "Ram It Down is"......1990 "Solid Ball Of Rock" and 1992 "Forever Free"......half of these 2 LPs are cool, the other halfs are not.
But the other 12 Saxon albums in the band's career are great albums.

Anyhow it was like being four and walking into a giant sweet shop- piles of records everywhere and all about £3-4 each. I got a few others and the guy at the till was like 'yeah we've got a pile of rock records just in in that box you haven't looked at' and I was like 'I know, but I've only got fifteen quid!'

Yeah Phantom,I'm not saying he is the best drummer or anything, but he is pretty good and most important...he fits with Saxon so well...
his first appearance with Saxon was in 1981 when Pete Gill was injured and Nigel replaced him on the Denim & Leather tour. His first album with Saxon was 1983's "Power And The Glory" album. He left Saxon in 1998 after the Unleash The Beast album, but came back in 2006 and has been with Saxon ever since.

No I don't J.D. However, I did purchase Live To Rock from the iTunes Store. It's not a bad song, but definitely not their best by a long shot. I need to hold off on any more music purchases so I can pay off all of the credit card debit I had to assume recently (starting over from scratch is expensive). The band has 18 studio albums and 12 of them are jewels. The other 6 LPs...."Crusader"...the opening song is a great Saxon track by all means and album cover but the rest of the album is not that great.
Innocence Is No Excuse album.(1985)...."Rock The Nations".(1986)....and Destiny(1988) albums are not good at all,mid 80's hair band type of B.S.
1990 "Solid Ball Of Rock" has a couple of good tunes but the other half is unworthy songs....same goes for the next album 1992 "Forever Free"...half of it is good, the other half is not. Saxon's first 5 albums are good with only maybe 1 or 2 songs on each that is not(8 songs out of 10 is not bad) and Saxon's last 7 studio albums are excellent, again with maybe an exception of 1 or 2 songs that are not up to the quality as the rest of the album, but again if an album has 10 or 11 tracks on it and you don't like 2 of them, thats still an albums worth of good material. That being said,I would recommend 12 Saxon LPs to Saxon fans.

Hey,no problem Darth!! Check out those 12 albums I've listed below, those are Saxon's best 12 albums out of thier 18 album career. But there are worthy tracks from the "Solid Ball Of Rock" and "Forever Free" albums...just not the whole album/albums...about half of each ones, the other halfs are pretty much throw away b-side quality of songs.

Hey J.D., I listened to Inner Sanctum a couple of times now and I think it was wind noise (not to mention that I listened when I was more awake). Good CD.
I already have a bunch of Saxon tunes on my laptop (Denim & Leather, Princess of the Night, Motorcycle Man, Crusader, Heavy Metal Thunder, and 747 (Strangers in the Night to name a few). I'll probably search through iTunes and see what else is there.

My car stereo is fine. Listened to Powerslave on the way to work this morning. Maybe wind noise is muting Biff's vocals? Time will tell as I intend to rip the CD to my iTunes this afternoon. I do have a bunch of Saxon tunes on my laptop already, and I am looking to add more. I'll have to PM you later with what I've got already.

Wow really? Are you sure its not the stereo your listening to it on? Because when I listen to it,his vocals are perfectly clear, the mix is right on how it should be..hum...not sure what to think about that one....not hearing what your hearing but its cool that you got a Saxon CD.
1979 'Saxon"
1980 "Wheels Of Steel"

1999 "Metalhead"
2001 "Killing Ground"

They open up with "Motorcycle Man" and it just kicks fuckin balls man!!! The atmosphere of this DVD is absolutely supurb!! From start to finish...it will make you wish you were there I can promise!! This live DVD is one of my favorites ever!! Thanks to "Angel" from Walsall England(missing member whom I speak with off the site on a consistant basis)for introducing me to this DVD and the new era of Saxon back in 2005!!

Just listened to the band "Freedom Call" and the track "Tears Of Taragon" and it was painful to sit through!! Yuk!! I know that Biff does some kind of narrative but I never heard it? Hum...just be glad it's not a part of "Saxon"!
