Hey thats cool Steve, yeah part 2 is a good show ect.. And yeah,Lionheart is Saxon's best album but only in my opinion,I'm not saying that everything I say must go....but I'm just judging thier albums on a traditional sound and then its all about opinions ect...but yes I would stick up for Lionheart as thier best album.I like all the tracks on this one,and even if you don't like ..lets say 2 tracks you don't care for there are still 9 other songs that are cool a whole album's worth of great Saxon material. Just scroll down this thread and check out those 12 albums that I said were Saxon's best,I'd say 90% of Saxon fans who know thier stuff would agree with me. Yeah Painkiller,it sounds like you almost have all of Saxon's 12 worthy albums. 12 albums out of 18 isn't bad. The Dogs Of War album has 10 songs,2 of them are utterly terrible(Hold On and Give It All Away) but the other 8 tracks are classic Saxon, you should enjoy that album. Unleash The Beast has 11 tracks and only 2 of them are weak(Terminal Velocity - although many Saxon fans like this track, I don't...and Absent Friends the ballad)but the other 9 tracks are classic Saxon.
Metalhead has10 songs and one of them is lame(Prisoner) but the other 9 tracks are great Saxon.Killing Ground has 11 tracks and 2 of them I didn't care for "Hell Freezes Over" and "Deeds Of Glory" but the other 9 tracks are great Saxon. The first Saxon album 1979 isn't their best material as Rocka Rolla isn't Priest's best either but its not terible,8 songs on it and the only one that blows is "Big Teaser" but the rest is 70's rock Saxon style, its worth getting if you like the band.
Also get 2003 "Heavy Metal Thunder" its a CD of re-recorded tracks from Saxon's first 6 studio albums, they re-recorded the song 'Crusader" wich is by all means a great Saxon track, just not a good album. But that album is worth getting,I like the updated version of Motorcycle Man better than the original on Wheels Of Steel, most of them are better...there are one or two that I prefer the originals better but for the most part the re-recorded tracks are better.
As I keep saying many times,Saxon's last 7 studio albums from 1995 Dogs Of War till now 2009 Into The Labyrinth are very consistant, extremely more consistant than the overrated poor song writting of Iron Maiden yet Maiden get all the credit out there.....its a joke.
Sweet. Thanks for the advice. So let's see.... all I am missing is Saxon, Power & The Glory, and Dogs of War to Killing Ground.

Crusader -1984
Innocense Is No Excuse -1985
Rock The Nations - 1986
Destiny -1988
Solid Ball Of Rock -1990
Forever Free - 1992
Those 6 albums are terrible and are not at all good Saxon records.Solid Ball Of Rock and Forever Free both have a few songs on them that are good Saxon songs but overall the albums suck. The first 5 Saxon albums are cool and the last 7 Saxon album are cool, those 12 albums are the Saxon that are good quality.
Saxon -1979
Wheels Of Steel -1980
Strong Arm Of The Law -1981
Denim & Leather -1981(same year as Strong Arm)

lol! Dude I know it! Yeah it was the label's idea to sound like this but it was Saxon who wrote the shitty songs, they totally sold out to the American market back then just to try an sell some albums, they "sold out". But yeah they have come around full circle these last 15 years, thats an under statement!
Just showing that Saxon does have some poor LPs.The worst 4 Saxon albums are 1984 Crusader even though the song Crusader itself is excellent, but the rest of the album really blows. Then there is 1985 Innocense Is No Excuse I don't like any songs off it,1986 Rock The nations has only 1 song on it thats ok the rest are shit,1988 Destiny album I don't like any songs off it at all. Those 4 albums suck. 1990 Solid Ball Of Rock and 1992 Forever Free both have half the album thats cool and half the album that sucks, kinda like Point Of Entry. Those 6 Saxon's albums are not as good as the other 12 albums I would recommend. [Show/Hide Quoted Message](Quoting Message by kiamat from Saturday, March 06, 2010 8:36:54 AM)

Let's take this song as an example. It begins with an excellent guitar solo, followed by a couple kick-ass riffs and then Biff Byford opens his trap and the whole thing goes down in flames. It's like that with almost every Saxon song IMO.

Batallions Of Steel This is the first song off Into The Labyrinth kiamt, this song like Valley Of The Kings is an excellent song. This track holds quality value as does The Sentinel and Hellrider ect...its very cool British Heavy Metal. And yeah I hate the Live To Rock song and the video is cringeworthy!! lol! It sucks as bad as the song does! lol!
Live To Rock was the first track that Saxon put out for the Into The Labyrinth album and I instantly didn't like it and now I hate it even worse but the album itself is very good.I think Lionheart and The Inner Sanctum are better albums but that doesn't mean Into The Labyrinth isn't good.
Take away 2 lame songs: Live To Rock and Hell Cat and you have 11 good Saxon tracks....
Batallions Of Steel
Demon Sweeney Todd
The Letter
Valley Of The Kings
Slow Lane Blues
Crime Of Passion
Premonition in D Minor
Voice
Protect yourselves
Come Rock Of Ages(The Circle Is Complete)
Coming Home(Bottleneck Version)
Urgghh- Live to Rock. Did you ever see the video for it? Cringeworthy stuff..
I have heard "Into the Labyrinth" but I only have the tracks 'Live to Rock' and 'Valley of the Kings' (Now that is a good song).

Ha ha yeah kiamat I don't get in a sing-along-poppy mood no but I do listen to upbeat shit like Motorhead and of course Saxon and Priest's uplifting songs like Don't Have To Be Old To Be Wise or something like that but Suzy Hold On is not one of them that does it for me!
But yeah back then the record lael did make them come up with pop tunes for the American market to try and sell records. Its like the album after Wheels Of Steel "Strong Arm Of The Law" where they have 8 songs and 1 of them is terrible "Sixth Form Girls" wich is cheesey!! lol!
But Saxon have come around full circle these last 15 years they have written the best material of thier career, better than thier 80's albums by far in my opinion.Have you heard thier last album 2009 "Into The Labyrinth"? Its a great album, maybe not Saxon's best but it is a good record....13 songs on it and only 2 of them are weak, the first single they put out "Live To Rock" I really hate and Hell Cat I can't stand either but the other 11 tracks are classic Saxon,11 songs makes up for a good album.

I agree its not one I play a lot- if I happen to be in the mood for something thats a bit sing-along and poppy its okay (I imagine that doesn't ever happen to you J.D.!), but its not very Saxon is it? I've heard that their record label used to insist on them sticking in a ballad or more mainstream track on their albums so the label could get a chart hit- which sucks, but at least the real fans got most of a real hard rocking album.

HAHAHAHA look at them in this video man, they look absolutely pathetic, the worst part that cracks me up the most is the part where Steve Dawson(bass player) attempts to jump on the drum riser thing but its not but 2 feet tall!!
Its a sad joke, the song itself is absolutely terrible in my opinion I know there are other Saxon fans who like this track, but to me its ridicoulous just as Parental Guidence was and is,but this time era Saxon spanked of bad image, you took one look at them and laughed your ass off!! But music wise YES you bet,the Wheels Of Steel album was and is great except for this Suzy Hold On track! LOL!!
Hey I love Saxon but there is nothing wrong with admitting they have some shitty tunes and albums and having a little fun spotting them out!! lol!! Edited at: Saturday, February 20, 2010 3:05:31 AM

Here is the intro "The Return" that goes into "Lionheart"...just absolutely awsome british heavy metal done the traditional way. [Show/Hide Quoted Message](Quoting Message by Steve Forrest from Tuesday, February 16, 2010 7:47:45 PM)

Hey thats cool Steve. You may not even like Saxon, but if I were to recomend an album to listen to would be 2004 "Lionheart". Saxon are a british heavy metal/rock band they play both british styled heavy metal like Judas Priest and Iron Maiden but they also have rock songs like Motorhead and AC/DC rolled into Saxon's style would be the best discribed sound I could come up with. Again they may not be your thing really but listen to Lionheart though. Do not listen to the mid 1980's albums they have 4 of them from 1984 to 1988 that are utterly embarresing.

I'm not even familiar with any of Saxon's music. I've been a metalhead for 30 years and I've always heard their name but never bought an album. I guess I need to try them out. I did hear The Meatmen do a cover of Freeway Mad recently. That song sounded good.

Humm very interesting kiamat, yeah that wouldn't suprise me either as Biff is a very versitile dude,he likes many types of music. This doesn't phase me as a Saxon fan though,if Rob can preach the word of Jesus Christ through the Winter Songs album than what Biff is doing is rather settleing wouldn't one think? lol!! Biff's vocal capabilities are not as outstanding as Rob Halford or Bruce Dickinson but he's got a very unique voice that doesn't sound average or boring, its very interesting and different yet still very rock and roll and british heavy metal.
Saxon are my 2nd favorite heavy metal band over Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden and the reason being is mainly because of the last 15 years and the last 7 albums by Saxon,if Sabbath or Maiden were releasing the best albums of thier career these last 15 years they may have been #2 but for me its Saxon and with good reason, thier last 7albums speak for themselves in the realm of heavy metal.
According to Wikipedia, Biff Byford works as an administrator for the Amadeus Orchestra sometimes- being on wikipedia I can't be certain that's true, but I once sang as part of a choir that recorded a DVD with the Amadeus Orchestra, so if it is true I'm pretty chuffed about it!
I know it might sound a little far out for a metal singer, but the Amadeus is all about giving young musicians a chance to make it as professionals, so I wouldn't be surprised.

Wheels Of Steel is a great record, there are 9 songs on it and the only one that sucks is the cheesey "Suzy Hold On" song! lol! That song is embarrasing and the other track that I never liked was "See The Light Shining" but the other 7 tracks are great Saxon songs, hey 2 out of 9 ain't that bad. To me,Lionheart is thier best album and The Inner Sanctum is thier second best album but I can see why you like the Wheels Of Steel album.
Its a tough call, but I think Wheels of Steel might be my favourite album. Every song is brilliant!
