A rock...a ton of bricks? Who's really keeping track after so much? Indeed it's been a hell-of-a-ride! I am emerging out of it ok, as is my family, but it's not over yet. I'm only "online" after-all. Happy to be back here though!!!  YEAHHHH!!!

Hello to everyone!
I'm just getting done reading alot of these posts. The Thread definately caught my eye. I hadn't heard the news of KK's leaving. Not even of the new CD Epitaph, or "Farewell" tour. I am at the moment just happy to be able to come back on here. Online even. Then hit with this news = shocked.

K.K. DOWNING: My Golf Course Was Never Reason For Not Doing Latest Tour With JUDAS PRIEST - July 3, 2011
Former JUDAS PRIEST guitarist Kenneth "K.K." Downing has shot down as "inaccurate" reports that he left the band because chose to concentrate on running his Astbury Hall 18-hole championship golf course in Shropshire, England.

In a recent interview with Express & StarJUDAS PRIEST bassist Ian Hill stated about Downing's departure from the group, "I think Ken had just had enough. He'd got a lot on his plate with his golf course and I think he couldn't spend the time away. This tour's going to be, by the time it's wrapped up, the best part of two years. It's a long, long time to be away from things and I just think Ken couldn't handle the time away."

In response to Hill's comments and the subsequent press reports which insinuated that Downing "chose golf over PRIEST," the guitarist has released the following statement via his official web site:

"The word 'think' depicts uncertainty; therefore it lends itself to supposition.

"I love Ian as a brother and nothing will ever change that, but his take on the situation in this instance is inaccurate, and the people from the press had no license to jump in and take what they thought was a cheap scoop out of what Ian thought the situation was.

"To concentrate on my golf course is not, and was never, the reason for not doing the latest tour with JUDAS PRIEST. I have had in place since last September the world's leading golf-management company known asTroon GolfTroon manages approximately 200 facilities world-wide; please see the facility directory at Troongolf.eu

"The course has been open and running smoothly since last September when it hosted a great charity event for the Lords Taverner's in aid of underprivileged children.

"Anyone that has ever known me will testify that I have always been dedicated to JUDAS PRIEST and the fans, and nothing has ever stopped me from touring until now.

"I have been busy going to concerts, metal exhibitions, trying to help younger bands to get off the ground, and have plans to travel on business to other countries including Finland, Spain, and the U.S. this summer.

"As for stepping out from PRIEST before the tour, I stand by my original official statement on the matter.

"Although I am not there, I wish for the name JUDAS PRIEST to forever be triumphant.

"I have no doubt the 'Epitaph' tour is sensational. I therefore urge you all again not to miss out this one, so please give your best support one more time to the mighty PRIEST."

just remember also that the price the CD sells for is a long way from the profits the band gets a cut of.  I dont know about CD's but most retail products have a store markup of 100%.  that pays the retailer.  now your talking a disk that sony sells for $7.5 to 12.5  they have to make the damn thing and ship it to stores.  still profitable if they move enough.  is it worth marketing.  probably if it belongs to some flavour of the month

[Nupe The Ripper] Friday, July 01, 2011 6:49:08 AM
Well yeah, with 250 000 illegal downloads, and with the average price of a CD being around 15 to 25 dollars, the total loss would be about four to five million dollars.

But then you have to remember how much of the CD's price goes to the band itself. With a major label, such as Sony which is Priest's label at the moment, even the biggest bands would be lucky to get ten percent of the profits. The rest goest to the label (about half), management, marketing and other costs, not to mention the reseller's own profit margin. So all in all the band itself has lost about three to five hundred thousand dollars - it's still a big sum, but nothing as near what the total sales price would be. So when record companies and copyright organizations speak loudly that "illegal downloading makes the artists lose money", they're lying quite much in that as they're only worrying about their own profits. Touring and merchandising is what really gives the bands a lot of profit these days.

That is not to say that I condone illegal downloading myself. I've downloaded many bands myself, including Priest, but I've always bought the albums afterwards. I still wan't to give the artist something from making such great music, even when it's just ten percent of the actual purchase price.

 Makes no sense, Hellrider.

What about the millions tied up in the tour that was in danger of falling through? Because this tour would not have happened had Priest not found a replacement for KK and the contractors and sub-contractors and all that circus shit was already settled; all that money would have been lost.

We don't know exactly what  the type of issues were between him and management. It's hard to throw guilt around when none of the parties says anything specific.

If he doesn't tour with Priest purely because of his golf course, then I wished that KK was able to delegate some of the responsibilities of managing his place to someone he trusts to run it for a few months longer, and give me the pleasure of seeing him play one last time. Micromanaging takes more of a toll on your business than choosing the right staff to run it. He should be worried about PR only.
But then I can be wrong, like I'm usually wrong.

KK should be there for the fans. Not appearing in the last tour over the reasons he gave is a slap in the face of all fans!
[.] Friday, June 24, 2011 3:14:37 PM
If KK really has trouble playing guitar due to his wrist injuries, then his game of golf must be real bad right now and now is the time to beat his ass on the green. I'm sure Glenn knows best about what he says and I'm just reading all the information available to me from the internet, anyway.

If Ian says that KK doesn't want to do anything in metal anymore, I have to believe him. However, KK supports a local band called Hostile, and IF I'm not mistaken, he co-wrote(?) a song called "Addiction". Seems like KK also likes to visit and support his metal buddies Dio's Disciples. KK's Finnish team will have a bunch of festival updates for me to read and enjoy learning about on KK's website.

Perhaps what Mr. Downing wants to do is simply to sit back and relax and enjoy his life without having to go on tour with Priest. I think he just wants to live in his own schedule on his own terms.

"Believe it, or believe it not!":     The latest comments from the band - Metal Hammer, July 2011:

(on KK's announcement)

IAN - "Disagreements between members of the band? That never happened before with us - ha! To Be honest, when you're in a band as long as we've been this sort of thing always happens. In the past, though, we've always got over such issues."

ROB - "We had no clue beforehand that KK felt this way. I recall exactly how I felt when he broke the news. It was as if the floor had opened & swallowed me. My mind was going off like a box of fireworks."

IAN -
"We'd all agreed this was the way it should be (the last tour). But (it was) his voice that was loudest. I wouldn't say he was behind the plan, but he seemed keener than the rest of us."

GLENN - "I think part of the problem was that he'd had a few injury problems, with his wrist in particular. But it was still something that none of us expected."

ROB - "None of us understood why he was doing this. We were all stunned. I remember lying awake that night, wondering what had happened, why things were going so wrong. But I think Glenn, Ian & I all felt that it would blow over, KK would change his mind & we'd get back on track."

IAN - "That's the reason we never announced this in the first place. We all went round to see him, all phoned him & did our best to persuade him to come back."

GLENN - "We wanted to give him as much time as we could. In the end we came close to messing everything up, because we gave him too much time. There was never the slightest indication from KK that he might come back, but we held on to the notion that he must return. It couldn't all end like this."

ROB - "My initial reaction was that it was over for Priest. It surely was the end, as we couldn't go on without KK. But then it dawned on me that this band is a lot bigger than any one member; we had to carry on."

GLENN - "We had a meeting & a choice to make. Either we stopped Judas Priest right now, or we looked for a new guitarist. Thankfully, all of us agreed that we owed it to ourselves & the fans to carry on."

(& on KK returning)

IAN - "He's not coming back. I've talked to him a lot recently & I know he has no interest in doing anything in music again. This won't come up. It's over."

GLENN - "The door will never be shut on him. If KK says he's up for a reunion, then we'll never dismiss it."

ROB - "I would welcome him with open arms. I know it would be difficult for Richie, but... when I returned [in 2003], Ripper graciously handed me the microphone & bowed out."

SO YOU STARTED THIS *&^%$  #$%!@ !!!!!!

Wise Old WWOL. It sounds as if you are giving up on KK coming back and accepting Richie Rich.

I'm glad you have kids and I hope you tell them ..."when you look up to the left side of the stage think of KK and what might have been".

Let your children know that this is not  true Judas Priest but an incredible simulation... kinda like Beatlemania.

Let them know and instruct them to pray very hard at night... for KK to return to the band, his band, JUDAS PRIEST...in the near future.

Let them also know that we are all Victims of Changes and JP Management needs to extend the olive branch to KK.

Finally, if your children and you see people with eye patches covering their left eye and chanting KK... they are just angry because they can't play golf like Sir Lord KK Downing of the STEEL MILL.

I too have come to the point of entry... I will see the show when it comes to my town... I will be in front of the entrance with all the Jesus Bible thumpers preaching..."Repent your sins and turn from false profits and Richie Rich".

Of course, like all hypocrites.... once the smoke clears and the people enter the concert... I will sneak in the back of the stage and see Rob scream... "Under Blood Red Skkkkkkkkkkkyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyysssssssssssssssssssssss"

If you told me 25 years ago they'd be touring in 2011, I wouldn't have believed it. The reality is,,,,,,,,,, from now until the day I die i will have only one oppurtunity to see Priest live with my kids,,,,,,,,, I'm still bummed out about KK but all I'm thinking about is:  When is Priest coming to my area? When can I get tickets?

I am disapointed to hear that K.K Downing left the tour, I would have rather seen the completed band(if they come down to East New England). It is a good thing that the rest of the members have continued to tour with Richie Faulker, who looks a lot like K.K.

I know, I would rather hear the original but that is not what is presently going on and I fall really easy into whining about shit I can't change so I'm looking at this in a way trying to make the best of reality and all the other Priest members are giving their best on stage.

Some live heavy metal music will get me into the spirit. I'm going to listen to some Vader. I haven't heard them in ages.

And I have to tell you one thing: No, Richie doesn't look at all like KK, because KK is very handsome and has an elegant demeanor while Richie in comparison looks butch.

In terms of playing, KK has had 40+ years of practice, while Richie has had what? 20, if he started at 10 or 11 yo.

Ritchie Faulkner is 31. When KK was 31 he had just made
'British Steel'
The fact that he looks like KK is also a bit cheeky innit?
Drink the Kool Aid guys, this is crass pandering at its most cynical.
What's sad is KK was getting better with age, I would much rather hear the
wisdom of the ages in KK's playing than the mimmickry of Faulkner's
And the other guy in the red corner is the best rock guitarist on the planet
and KK still could do some things he could not.

[.] Wednesday, June 15, 2011 3:21:03 PM

To say one is better than the other right now doesn't feel right to me, but you're the one who went to the show. Richie is the one on stage right now, so in that respect he is better.

Like one of those divorces that are very sour and the children feel helpless between the warring sides.

But you can't let that detract from the fact that there is this amazing NEW guitarist with Priest.

There are a lot of rumours going on. I can't believe that management would insist on KK touring if he is hurt, and I can't see how him being hurt would cause a war of words between anybody.

[icomearoundnow] Friday, June 03, 2011 3:51:12 PM
I got from a good source that the whole thing was due to a business disagreement with management. I also noticed that KK is mixed too low on "Touch of Evil Live"..which is shocking and appalling. JP on Idol was fine with me, I'm still mad they didn't get 'Reckless' on Top Gun..

If KK didn't fancy touring the world again then so be it.  I was so shocked that he was probably the last member of the band to want to retire.  However, if he's had wrist injuries and he can't get the enthusiasm for the tour then this is the best thing.  The other guys were messing around cos they couldn't believe he meant it and would come back.  Then they had to decide what to do, they would probably have lost a lot of money if they just finished the band there and then and if they really do want to carry on then great.  It will depend on how Richie fits into the band because if there too many problems then they will just call it a day.  I like the idea of someone like Tony Iommi touring with the band but it probably wouldnt have worked long term and this way the band many be able to carry on for a few more years yet.  Lets wish them all the best of luck and look forward to a great tour.

I have been pretty quiet here regarding this subject. I love ALL of the guys in this band. I do not know the specifics of what went on and I would hate to speculate on it. I do know that KK Downing is a wonderful person and I wish him nothing but the best. I already miss him terribly. As for Richie Faulkner I will give him a chance, he is giving me the chance to still see this awesome band. No, it will definately not be the same but I will still be happy to hear the other guys and see the other guys.

I think we all agree that they should kick their management right in the ass and out the door!! Better yet, the fans could all line up and management could run through the gauntlet of pissed off fans! I still think KK was onboard for the tour at first and then something happened after that, but who knows. I'm not going to judge Faulkner until I see him either. I wish him well, it's got to be very hard trying to step in now with all that is going on.

I hope they kick some ass here.  then they can kick some managment ass too.

"Real" heavy Metal (period)!  Doesn't matter if it's British.  Though they are British.  They (the core of JudasPriest) are HeavyMetal

I choose to withhold any further discussion of how I see Faulkner fitting into the picture until after I see them live.  It's taken an entire month to let it sink in that the majority of my irritation lies with what is being said on behalf of the band and how this whole business was handled.  Yeah.  I've said in the past that I support managements decisions.  But I withdraw that statement.  This whole mess could have gone down with a LOT less drama, if anyone with any sense were on watch.  Clearly the handlers were asleep, afraid, or clueless.
[J.D. DIAMOND] Sunday, May 22, 2011 5:44:47 AM
I was wrong including you,I apologize but those others that keep complaining about how its not Judas Priest without K.K. ect...well if they are so passionate about K.K.'s retirement and K.K. and Priest in general then where were they before he retired?  If they are new fans then while its reasonable to worship K.K. you'd think they would be looking forwards to Richie Faulkner.  Now that the problem is settled K.K. can golf into retirement and Judas Priest can focus on what they are supposed to focus on "real british steel heavy metal traditional style.

Ah, that makes sense. I think collectively we have this well explained now…
KK belongs in the band. RICHie RICH belongs in a comic book.
Judas Priest is KK. KK is Judas Priest. Priest is not Priest without KK.
JP Management needs to extend the olive branch and bring KK back.
JP Management needs to pay RICHie RICH for his time and send him packing.

Thanks Nupe, I wasn't sure of the specifics, just heard bits and pieces. Now that really makes me wish that they had re-recorded Rocka Rolla and Sad Wings of Destiny! Even remastered, the quality of the recording of Rocka Rolla wasn't very good and would be GREATLY improved if they re-recorded it. The songs are great on it, but it's like the mics weren't turned on or something in the studio! Even KK said that they don't know why it sounded like that because they were playing their asses off! But that's another dream of mine that will not be fulfilled now that KK left the band. No way I want them to re-record those 2 albums now....

Gull Records owns all the rights to any recordings Priest made while they were under that label. That includes all studio albums, demos etc. but not the songs themselves. The copyright of those still reside with the writers (a reason why most of the Priest compilations use live versions of the older tracks to avoid having to pay licensing fees to Gull). Meanwhile, Gull can license those two albums however they please, which has led to the abundance of reissues and -packagings of them. In fact, because the band members and management wanted Metalogy to contain songs from every studio album, they had to license a couple of old tracks from Gull because no recordings of those songs recorded after Priest broke with Gull exist. Although why they didn't use a live version of Tyrant instead of the studio track on the compilation is a bit of a mystery...

Sorry for the misunderstanding, let me rephrase, replace own with controlled. To me, if someone has that much power and control over what you do, they "own" you. So, when I say "own", I mean that the record company controlled what Rob did as well as everything that Priest did. They had control over what Rob did, including his solo career if he stayed in Priest while doing it. He didn't want them to be able to dictate what his solo album would sound like or whether he could tour, etc., so he quit Priest to break the contract. It pisses me off that record labels have that much control over the artists, but they do. I don't mean that Priest and Rob don't own the rights to their own material, they do own them (except for the first two albums on Gull). But the record label decides what they can and can't do and what they must do to fulfill their contract. It is in that sense that the record company "owns" them, by dictating what they have to do to fulfill the terms of the contract and Priest really doesn't have a lot of say in it. As for Gull, I do believe that Gull actually owns the rights to those songs like you said and I do think they have to pay them to use them, but I'm not sure either. I always thought that they should re-record those two albums and then release them and screw Gull over, but I bet they can't if Gull actually owns the rights to those songs.

What I meant was, we'll see how involved with the album KK was when it comes out based on the writing credits. Seems to me he was very involved considering the album is almost finished according to Rob. I have a feeling this had more to do with the record company telling them that if the new album is released, they were required to tour that album for x amount of time. Then things snowballed from there.

Rob had stated many times that the record company "owned" whatever he wrote when he was in Priest, whether it was solo or with Priest. They controlled what he would do in his solo career and he wanted to get his own contract and not be bound to the Priest record label. That is why he said he had to leave Priest, in order to break that contract and be able to do what he wanted, which was the purpose of the solo career in the first place. Very sad that he had to do that. So I think the record label has screwed Priest since day one! It doesn't matter which label they are with either, all of them have caused problems.

I'm also holding out hope that KK will make a few appearances at selected shows. Afterall, how long can he resist the allure of the Sinful Gals??

I thought, and I could well be wrong that they owned the catalog after the gull years.  they sold the publishing rights but not the usage rights in the subsequent deals.  but I could be wrong.  I did read once that if they played anything live from the gull years they had to pay gull a royalty

Very good point about the record company!  Is it still CBS London ? Sony / Epic ?  Unless they buy the rights to the "songs" 'don't think own them in that regard.  About touring in support of, so enough units get sold, is more like it ; )  At the end, not knowing how the contract reads, writers / artists are still entitled in that regard.  And the record company and management are entitled respectively.  If I recall, the reason things went south with Gull was the band were naive and believed the only way to get signed by a major was to sign over the rights to their music.  Please correct if I am wrong.

I cannot say if writing credits would factor in.  Ken is intelligent enough to protect intellectual property.  With him it would be more the perceived deception (and I know this from previous experience, which I will NOT discuss in this forum).  The going behind his back to arrange auditions, etc.  The only motive mgmt has in order to keep things moving following Epitaph.  The band thinking, he's not onboard to tour after the album is released so we have to get on with it.  There was another time in 'Priest history where they transitioned a player in the midst of a tour > album release > tour.  He's known by most now as the best thing to happen to JP.  Others know him only as Scott Travis.  Still, finding out a replacement has been found is the proverbial kick in the gut!  I'm sure, after reality sinks in, logic will prevail.  They will remain friends.  The band plays on.  Perhaps a few appearances by Ken at selected venues (shrugs).  All speculative, wishful thinking ... but very possible.  I'm relatively certain ticket sales began with KK onboard for the entirety of Epitaph!

OK, we were just talking and hit upon another thought: what is the record companies take on this? Perhaps KK was all for the album and Epitaph tour and like you said, not on board for subsequent touring. The record company may have said that they had to tour for a certain amount of time after the release of the new album and perhaps do a new tour for it. I don't really know what record companies require from bands, so this is just speculation on our part. But I don't think KK was up for anything past the Epitaph tour and new album. Rob pretty much quit Priest due to the record company believing that they "owned" anything that he penned, so he had to quit Priest in order to be free to do what he wanted. Maybe this has more to do with the record company than anything else? Just another angle to consider....

Yes, that totally makes sense to me because he is definitely onboard in this interview. I'm not sure how the album fits in and I guess we won't know until it comes out, whether KK has writing credit and is playing on it or not? It seems like he must have been writing it with Rob and Glenn and now Rob says that the album is almost finished.... I think you are right about KK finding out that they were looking to replace him and that they intended to keep Priest going and maybe he just thought, well if they are going to replace me anyway, why not retire now? Of course, that's just my own ideas swirling around in my head. I don't know if there was a big blow out or not. Everyone in the band that has spoken, including KK, just seems very sad about the entire thing. They appear to still be friends and I really hope that is true.

But the main point here is that many people were claiming that the tickets to the Epitaph tour were sold under false pretenses, with the band knowing that KK had retired but chose to not release that info until April 20th, and this interview PROVES that is NOT THE CASE!

After watching this video again, methinks, and this is pure speculation, that he'd made his mind up to retire following Epitaph.  Likely was not onboard to tour in support of another album.  Upon letting the band / mgmt know of this decision wheels were put in motion to look for another axeman to record the new album.  Ken didn't know they were looking.  Then he found out.  IMO he was onboard to record the new album.  Just not for subsequent touring.
