I would have to say that I rate Painkiller just after Stained Class, HBFL, B Steel, and SFV...not neccessarily for quality of music (although that is a huge part of it) but also for the era at the time these albums were released. I've rocked to Painkiller soooo many times, and still do...and that album, at that particular time, totally restored all faith in Priest being the Metal Gods!!! I just wish we didn't have to wait so long for it to come out...but Priest work at their time frame, not mine...I'm just glad they put out a record that finally had some balls teeth to it!!! It totally washed away the taste of Turbo and Ram It Down!!!! |

I too believe PK is over done. If you followed JP back in the early 80's (as I did) you tend to agree as all their releases (except Turbo) were better than PK. Lyrics are borderline laughable, too recycled musically and the tour wasnt all that. Can anyone ever forget the dreaded Operation Rock n Roll in 1991? That wasnt Priest at their best for sure.. I have a soft spot for Painkiller... it was the first Priest album I ever heard.. but I do agree that this should not be 'the album' that all Priest work done since should be compared to. In fact, I hate it when people compare any albums to previous ones.. every new album should be just that: A new, fresh offering that is a new journey for all involved to go on together.. There's space for all the Priest albums.. (lol sorry MG.. you've got me reminiscing now). |

okay, i dont think they shouldve "skipped" Ram It Down and Turbo...some amazing songs came from those albums, as they werent as strong as Sad Wings or British Steel, they were good albums and i think every Priest album they are developing their style in a different way, and i dont know if we would have painkiller if Turbo or RID came out. (IMO) cuz i rlly liked blood red skies and the title track ram it down, and yes...turbo was pretty poppy at times, but i rlly like out in the cold, turbo lover, and reckless.
and what was said earlier how ppl hung on to painkiller cuz it was the last halford album until AoR. I am a fairly new fan of Priest and thts not why i love the album so much. Its not My fav, but its such a consistent album and every song on it sounds great. thts my opinion |

"Priest has always been all over the place with their sound but always keeping a HEAVY metal twist on it."
That one single statement alone covers all there is to say when describing Priest's style!! Couldn't have said it better myself. Long gone are what I consider to be the classics such as Victim of Changes, Beyond the Realms of Death, Dreamer Deceiver, Call for the Priest and Stained Class. To me, those songs leave Painkiller eating dust. As far as a Painkiller type song on each album...well, Priest has proven they can play as fast and as heavy as any band can...been there done that. I'm sure if they wanted to bust out a thrasher, they very well could do it. Keeping with your quote, I would have to admit that even on the albums that I don't care for, the Metal twist is evident on them as well. Turbo has the songs Turbo Lover, Locked In and Hot for Love are the ones I like and they definately fit your quote, especially live. Point of Entry has Hot Rockin' and Desert Plains (live) . Ram It Down has Ram It Down and Hard As Iron. So, even with what I consider to be my least fav (and weakest) albums, I can find at least 1 or 2 gems on each. I'm a fan of Maiden as well, but they lost me even before Dickenson left. I have heard a lot of all their music as a good friend of mine is to Maiden what I am to Priest, and as I've told him many many times, I just don't find there music interesting anymore. I loved there first 7 or so albims, but they beat their sound to death. How many of us wear the same jeans or color shirt every day?? Even I have more than 1 pair of shoes. Maidens new music doesn't inspire me at all, and music has to move me if I am going to enjoy it. Painkiller, in and of itself, is definately a great song and great Priest album, but just 1 in a long list of great songs and great albums, but I am looking forward to their next classic... Very few bands can continue on with as much fan base as they used to after getting a new singer. I know alot of fans just looked the other way after Painkiller, and thats probably why they keep comparing other albums to it. The idea now that there is a Painkiller like song on each new album is even now a give in. AOR- Hellrider, Nostradamus- Nostradamus. Everyone is still wanting that insanly heavy fast painkiller-like sound, even though you look at Priest over the last almost 4 decades and you can't find an album that sounds like the one before it. Iron Maiden is one of my favourite bands, but their sound since Dickinson has come back has been locked in this "new maiden" sound. I still really like the new albums, but each sounds very similar like they've got the one direction they're heading in. Priest has always been all over the place with their sound but always keeping a HEAVY metal twist on it. I think that Painkiller is what a lot of fans hang their hat on because of the last several releases prior to Painkiller. I mean, let's face it, Turbo, Priest Live and Ram it Down were hardly (IMO) setting the Metal world on fire. Then comes Painkiller, a wonderful album that put Priest right back in the realm of relevancy once again, then Halford leaves. In most fans opinion, Painkiller was the last true Priest release until AoR, so Painkiller was all there was for 15-16 years, that's a long time for any band. In a way, I think that's why SFV was as great as it was. After British Steel we had POE and a lot of us thought that was disappointing and caused the band to lose a little momentum (even though it performed well in sales, but I think that was an after effect of BS), then Defenders in '84 in which it would be 6 more years 'til the great Painkiller. I will say this about Painkiller though, it's very rare that an album receives such high praise from the public being the 12th studio release, most bands aren't around for 12 albums. Painkiller should have came after Defenders and they could have skipped over Turbo and RID...but history is what it is. Painkiller, from 1984 to 2005 is the only great Priest effort (IMO), and that is why it gets the attention it does. |

It had a sound that reminded me of the older, classic Priest and I fell in love with it.
There has been some debate over British Steel, and all but I like the album. Period. I do not see how that qualifies me as a "sheep" or a "fanboy" or any other juvenile insult. Those that like Turbo are welcome to that opinion. I do not care for it. Don't hate it. I just do not have it in my top five. Same with Point of Entry and Rockarolla. Does not mean they are bad albums. I think the best part in all of this is that we all have our opinions and we all can agree we LOVE the Band. At the end of it all, THAT is what matters. | | paorcamp wrote: | | there's only one thing I want to say...I hope you get my point
we(I hope so) all here are priest fans...at least I am...I also understand that all of us could have a favorite album, or more. the thing is that someone who pretends that "his or her" favorite band keep the style of one single album DOES NOT DESERVE to be considered a fan...bands are not only our favorite album, and real bands have a style...I cannot say priest is not priest because roca rolla is very different from ram it down...the thing is that those who pretend that a band keep the same scheme and that every single album sounds the same instead of keeping its escence or its style is not a real fan, cannot be considered a real fan and his or her point of view could also become offensive...would't you get bored of listening any album if it is just the same as a previous one or the following one??
I'm very happy that all priest albums are different...because that's what we love of music, its variability and the capability of our musicians, our artists to show what they can do...if all albums are just the same I would probably think that the members of that band don't know how to play a guitar or the drums because all tracks are just a copy of any other...
to conclude...there's no band keeping the same style in one album or another...every album is a new experience, and every album should have its own mysticism and its own spirit in its own way! Edited at: Saturday, June 13, 2009 10:33:59 AM |

There is a rickroll... One of these three... Take your pick.
It could be...
This one,

we(I hope so) all here are priest fans...at least I am...I also understand that all of us could have a favorite album, or more. the thing is that someone who pretends that "his or her" favorite band keep the style of one single album DOES NOT DESERVE to be considered a fan...bands are not only our favorite album, and real bands have a style...I cannot say priest is not priest because roca rolla is very different from ram it down...the thing is that those who pretend that a band keep the same scheme and that every single album sounds the same instead of keeping its escence or its style is not a real fan, cannot be considered a real fan and his or her point of view could also become offensive...would't you get bored of listening any album if it is just the same as a previous one or the following one??
I'm very happy that all priest albums are different...because that's what we love of music, its variability and the capability of our musicians, our artists to show what they can do...if all albums are just the same I would probably think that the members of that band don't know how to play a guitar or the drums because all tracks are just a copy of any other...
to conclude...there's no band keeping the same style in one album or another...every album is a new experience, and every album should have its own mysticism and its own spirit in its own way! Edited at: Saturday, June 13, 2009 10:33:59 AM |

I agree with you 101%!!!! It just bothered me when I heard some kids listening to British Steel and saying it could not have been JP, becuase it did not sound like Painkiller. Maybe they will learn.....
But really I love Painkiller, it is a great album, I just wished that other albums will get that same respect. [Show/Hide Quoted Message] (Quoting Message by spapad from Friday, June 12, 2009 11:43:45 PM)

IC, I understood your comments but you have to respect the album, at the same time, as your saying, your tired of getting to hear about as a standard they should always have.
They have done Fabulous albums over time, and we all have been loving each and everyone one of them! It's some people's opinion but by no way all our opinions, that Painkiller is the one classic.
I am a diehard fan of the Priest. I love all their albums, and the only song I would surely call on the carpet is "Troubleshooter" Oh my God! I couldnt look the members of JP in the face and tell them I like that song. It is the only truely lame song they have released over the many years they have been around.
The library of Metal they have produced is wonderfull! There is no "bad" Album. Each album has it's credibility and I know you can see that. (Quoting Message by icecreamman from Friday, June 12, 2009 11:26:59 PM)

I am not burnt out on listening to it. I love the album, all I am saying is that I am sick of everyone wanting Priest to make another Painkiller, okay, Painkiller was great, but I think it is time to move on. I have read reviews on other sites of AOR and Nostradomus. For AOR they say it sounds too much like Painkiller. For Nostradamus they say it is dissapionting becuase it doesnt sound like Painkiller.
In fact one of my favorite JP songs is One Shot at Glory, I have nothing against the album itself. Go read the threads, read them. I promise you on every thread dealing with any Priest music everyone jumps on the bandwagon. It is like, "Okay I want to look like I know something about Priest, I will just rant and rave about how great Painkiller is." Also, just go and listen to some other Priest albums, Defenders of the Faith or Sin After Sin, I cant name many people who rant and rave over them. They are great albums to. I encourage all fans to listen to every album. I can honesly say I love them all. From Rocka Rolla to Nostradomus, including the Tim Owens years. I really love them all. I think a lot of them are overlooked. Yes, on a few of the albums there are songs I skip over sometimes becuase I really dont like them very much, but I love JPs music, Painkiller included. Well... Heres my two cents... I agree, Painkiller seems to be getting the most attention. Good or bad... I dont know, it just seems to be their most popular song and album, so I guess the attention it gets makes sense. Doesnt bother me.
Personaly, Painkiller is far from my favourite Priest song, and the same with the album. If Priest ever do an album like one they already did, I hope they will look to stuff like Turbo, Point of Entry or Defenders of the Faith for inspiration. |

[Show/Hide Quoted Message] (Quoting Message by icecreamman from Friday, June 12, 2009 11:26:59 PM)

Painkiller is a masterpiece so just cool it. OK! If you are burnt out then stop listening to it. Simple solution.
Thats my opinion of this thread.
